My Day with Barbaro's Brothers: Part I Lentenor

First, I would like to thank Mr. Mitchell and Blood-Horse for allowing me the opportunity to moderate the "Tracking Barbaro's Brothers" blog.  I am both humbled and honored.  I grew up in Connecticut and Vermont and currently call Connecticut my home. My father’s farm in Vermont is where my love for horses all started at a very young age. Having different animals on the farm, including horses, the day he came home with a OTTB called Comanche was the day my fascination with anything and everything to do with horses started. Comanche would be my loyal companion for many years. I started to attend different race tracks in New England and the East coast when I was a teenager and continue to this day.

In 2005, a beautiful, talented and charismatic colt caught my eye - yes, along came Barbaro.

My connection to Barbaro started when I saw him win the Laurel Futurity in November of 2005. When I saw him win that race, I knew I had just witnessed perfection in motion. When I attended Barbaro’s Derby in 2006, it was a thrill I will never forget, and I remember every moment like it happened yesterday. While I try to follow almost every race I possibly can around the country, I am particularly fascinated with Barbaro’s family and their amazing connections. With that said, I would like to share my day I had with both brother’s, Lentenor and Nicanor, this past Saturday.  It was quite a day.
--Greg Jones

My Day with Barbaro's Brothers: Part I Lentenor
The day started when I left my house in Connecticut at 3:30 in the morning to begin my drive to Fair Hill training center in Cecil County, Maryland, home of Nicanor and Lentenor. A light rain started to come down about ten minutes before arriving; little did I know this rain would become a major factor as the day played out. When I drove into Fair Hill, I felt like I was entering a different world, situated in the countryside of Maryland, It is over 350 acres of equine bliss. After getting lost inside of Fair Hill, I eventually found my way to my destination, the barn where Lentenor was, Parlo 3, one of two barns owned by Mr. Matz (Vintage Farms). Inside, Lentenor was getting prepared to have his first official breeze since his last work on April 14th.

We then headed over to the clocker’s tower to watch the morning works and waited for Lentenor to make his way over. He arrived with regular rider Peter Brette aboard, joined by a young talented filly named Martita Sangrita also owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson. Mr. Matz was not far behind riding his horse, Messaging.  Since it was raining, Lentenor’s breeze was moved from the muddy dirt track to the tapeta surface, which isn’t affected by the rain. They passed underneath the dirt track through a tunnel to get to the tapeta track, which is inside the dirt track. Even from a distance, Lentenor sure looked like he had grown and he seemed to relish the fact he was on the track doing what he loves to do, run, and run fast. He first galloped effortlessly by us, then proceeded to breeze an easy three furlongs, It looked like he floated over the surface with his long strides. If my day had ended there, it would have been well worth the trip, but, it was only the beginning of a day I won’t ever forget.

After the work, we went back to the barn, and shortly thereafter, we went inside to greet Lentenor. Upon entering, I was taken aback on how spotless the barn was; I have never seen a barn that clean and well managed in my life. The whole time I was there, I never saw one fly; I am not joking, not one! If anyone has ever been in a barn before, that is unheard of. One could tell that being inside Mr. Matz’s barn is pure heaven for these colts and fillies.  I applaud Mr. Matz and his staff for maintaining this perfect environment. I then approached Lentenor‘s stall.  I will say this, seeing Lentenor up close is quite an experience. I was in awe of how tall and muscular he has become since last seeing him in person at Aqueduct this past November. While he isn't close to being in racing shape due to his long lay-off, he still is a very impressive young colt. He had his legs wrapped in ice following his work (which is a common practice after a workout), and he seemed to love the attention he was receiving. While feeding him mints, his kind eyes would lull you into feeling very safe and then that mischievous youngster in him would come out, and if not careful, he would try to give you a quick nip just to keep you on your toes! After spending this incredible morning with Lentenor and other colts and fillies, it was time to head over to Delaware Park to see his older brother, Nicanor, race in the Sussex Stakes.

HEY GREG, Need any help?
sandieh 16 Jul 2010 4:21 PM
Wonderful to have you providing the details via The Bloodhorse!  If the Barbaro brothers only knew how much they are loved!  There are so many racing fans like myself that really like this type of information, following the ones that they love.  More owners/trainers should allow this of their horses.  I know some do, but most don't.  But, if they did, think of the number of loyal fans that would be gained for the sport!
Thanks again.

Great writing too, I knew you were meant for this. :D
Curlin Bandwagoneer 16 Jul 2010 11:22 PM
Great story!!!  Can't wait for more updates.  MM is a true horseman as evidenced by his barn.  Can't help but think Barbaro is smiling down from Heaven watching all of our reactions to his family.  Barbaro was a true champion, and it was such a shame we will never see his full potential.  I believe that he would have been a TC winner, but for some unknown reason he was taken from us too soon.  At least we have his family to live on and he in turns lives on thru them.  God Bless the Jacksons for sharing their horses with us.
Robin from Maryland 17 Jul 2010 12:23 AM
How fantastic is this? The perfect blog and perfect writer finally meet..can't wait to keep reading because it is all as it should be.

wonderful journey, greg-thank you for crafting your thoughts and impressions

Great opening article Greg! A perfect marriage - an original FOB family member officially reporting from the inside. BH was very smart to tap you for this "duty" - and all the connections continue to amaze with their willingness to share all the ups and downs with us crazy FOB fans. I'll be printing out all of these. Hi - from balmy Phoenix to the rest of my FOB "kin".

Hey Sandeith
go to throughbred pedigree.com and  put in "Riches Causeway" and you will see the yearling filly
(who is un-named) to Rags2Riches and Giants Causeway  she, I would guess is 1 1/2 years old by now...born a few days before Margano...Her next born is a colt by Henrythenavigator and I have a picture of him...Both offspring of Rags2Riches look like her..same beautiful chestnut
If a person had a stallion and wanted a foal from a particular mare, would a person be able to a deal and get a foal??  no idea here...
Ragsy 17 Jul 2010 3:43 PM

Ragsy, thank you SO MUCH for that tip, aren't these babies precious?
I also learned that LaVille Rouge is a Grandmother! Holy Ground, her first son, sired a filly (cute baby) in 2009, named Graced with Power. Holy Ground also won at Delaware Park, he ran on dirt and turf.
Greg, thank you again for such a well written story, you know how much this family means to us and that we love to hear this type of news. NO FLYS? Not even one? I hope you stay around for a long time and continue to write for us!

Hi Mr. Jones,
What a wonderful story about your day with Lentenor!
I was so pleased to read that Mr. Matz's barn is very clean and no flies.
I am eager to read Part 2, 3, 4, 5, etc about Lentenor, Nicanor, and Baby Margeno.
Suggestion: why doesn't Mr. Matz have a website regarding his barn activities so his audience can read about those activities plus see photos of the beautiful horses and their surroundings?
Thank you for such a lovely update on Lentenor.

Question: I will be going to Delaware Park about mid August, do you think Lentenor will be racing by then or will it still be a little too early?  Or perhaps Mr. Matz will move him to Saratoga? Thank you again for your wonderful insight and the article you penned.  Looking forward to many more.

would ya consider putting a picture of Graced With Power by Holy Ground and let others see the Grand Daughter of La Ville Rouge.  Now, what would the relation to the Brothers be? Cousin?  heck I dont know in horses!! please and pretty please, I can email the picture from Juliana her owner...she has given permission if you want.......whatever you decide is fine with me...thanks
Ragsy 22 Jul 2010 4:34 PM
Ragsy, I think Graced With Power is the niece (since she is the daughter of Holy Ground) of Barbaro's family. Oh Boy, our family is getting bigger! And let's not forget Man in Havana who now goes by the name "Cuban", all of the boys are beautiful horses! love and carrots to all!

WELL DONE GREG J...I've so missed your eloquence and all the  relevant information you have always so generously contributed.  Your devotion is unquestionable and I have no doubt you will continue to do a superior job keeping everyone updated in a prompt and informed manner.  What a coup for Bloodhorse and the blog.  Congrats and again, well done.  You certainly deserve it!

PatC 23 Jul 2010 5:27 PM
Thank you Greg.  Margano looks like Dynaformer.  He's a beauty.
Mary 23 Jul 2010 7:10 PM
Something different  - I was watching a TVG telecast of Mountaineer races and noticed in the saddling area walking ring is a jockey with Lael colors in a small garden area. What does this commerate? Don't think I ever paid much attention before so I have no idea what it represents. Would appreciate any information regarding this.
Good luck to Bahama Bound tomorrow!
Dona 24 Jul 2010 12:04 AM

I read somewhere that Man In Havana was really enjoying his new role, sure wish there was updates on these fabulous horses...God Bless all horses...
I think I will dump facebook too much time and trouble...
Ragsy 25 Jul 2010 8:59 AM
Irene..I didn't want you to think I hadn't answered your question about getting an FOB shirt.  I posted on all three TBBrother's sites and they were all taken off. I gave you a web site to go to but now I can't find it.  I think I'll ask Greg if could help me get the word out about the shirts. Don't know what else to do. Sorry. The web page is still on ABR but you will have to enroll as a member (free) in order to get on. Just enter an email address and a password. We are still trying to get enough shirts to place an order.

PatC,
Yes, having a small tornado hit your neighborhood and knock your power out for two days is NO fun, could have been worse though.  Part two will be posted tonight, thanks.
BarbC,
As far as Lentenor being ready by the middle of August?  I would say that would be a little too soon.  There is no rush and Lentenor will show Mr. Matz when he is ready.
Dona,
About you seeing a jockey wearing the LAEL colors at Mountaineer?  I looked at all the entries and none were owned by The Jacksons.  Could have just been that the colors were similiar to the LAEL colors?
Thanks again to everyone for the kind words!
Greg J. 26 Jul 2010 7:45 AM
Holy Ground is one beautiful horse his mother La Ville Rouge sure produced some goodlooking horses and Grace looks like Grandmother priced to sell,  wonder what it costs to transport?
Ragsy 26 Jul 2010 10:45 AM
Does anyone else notice how much Lentenor resembles Barbaro? Geez
My only problem is that I can't figure out why these horses are so lightly raced?  I would love to see a full brother/sister to Barbaro in a Ky Derby in the near future, but hey, to enter the Derby, they must have experience enough to qualify as Barbaro did. Come on Mike Matz, allow Dynaformer's progeny step up to the plate! Get them out there!
Aleine in VA 26 Jul 2010 12:34 PM
Greg, thank you for answering.  I certainly agree, there's no rush, we want them all healthy.  Has there been any word on how Nicanor is doing?  Looking forward to the second half of your article.
Thanks again.
BarbC 26 Jul 2010 12:52 PM
Hi Greg,
No, it was a statue of a jockey in a small gargen area that the horses walk around before entering the track. Was just wondering if anyone knew what this was. It definitely was the Lael colors. I checked every time the saddleing area was panned by the camera just to be sure.
Dona 26 Jul 2010 2:17 PM
Dona-
Perhaps the statue at Mountaineer was for past winners of the WV Derby?  Ready Set (owned by the Jacksons) won in 2008 I believe.
hsLewis 26 Jul 2010 3:48 PM
Aleine in Va,
I wouldn't really say these horses are lightly raced.  Nicanor had a bone bruise that took many months to heal, then he had to be trained up to racing fit which is more months.  It takes something like two months of galloping after a layoff before you will be asking for even a 2f breeze.  It will take probably another two months to be ready to run once you start breezing.
Some horses don't make it to the races as 2-year olds for one reason or another.  That's just the way it is and there isn't anything a trainer can do to change the way a baby develops.  Pushing to get a baby to the races is just setting the baby up for injury.
It is not uncommon for horses running in the upper levels to race at most once a month.  Many trainers give their horses some time off during the year, usually in the winter.
If I remember correctly, Lentenor raced in the fall and through the spring.  Lentenor must have given Matz a reason to stop on him and give him a break.  It might have been Lentenor was tired and needed the break or Matz might have decided that he would need a break sometime this year, and thought it was better in late spring/early summer than in the fall.
Although Lentenor didn't run in any of the Triple Crown races, he was training as if he was being pointed to those races.  The Triple Crown is a real grind on those horses since they don't get any down time between their two and three year old year.  Many horses end up done after the Triple Crown, simply because it is so grueling.
Things happen to keep horses out of the entries--sometimes they spike a fever before a race or maybe just aren't training well.  Or maybe they are showing stress.  Sometimes there isn't a race written that you want to enter.
Horses aren't in training without some kind of a plan.  Just because we aren't privy to the plan doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Have patience.

Can't wait for part II!!!
Dallas 27 Jul 2010 1:23 PM
Yes Ragsy, young Graced looks like her daddy, she looks about the same color as Rags to Riches "Baby Girl". And it looks like All of Laville Rouge's sons have the "star" on their forhead. And I won't mind comming down to help you hitch up!
I can't wait to hear if the lastest Babynor will be a filly or colt, but then again, I pray for a healthy baby horsey!
Nicky and Lennie and Margano, hope to hear some news on the boys soon, Greg spoiled us with such a good article, we are "jumping" online for part 2!And Greg, at the risk of sounding selfish, after you do an article on sweet Nicky, can you do one on Margano? Pleassssse? Good, good story, i was disappointed it had to end, I wanted to keep reading!
Sincere gratitude to Greg and Bloodhorse, and of course Roy and Gretchen Jackson for sharing news on this very dear family!
