Margano Today at Belmont Park, Post Time 1:32

Twenty eight days after his debut, Margano will be making his second start at Belmont Park in race #2, post time is about 1:32 for the Maiden Special Weight race.  A field of eight are scheduled to be in the gate for the race, to be run at a distance of one mile on the Belmont turf.  The weather here all week has been miserable, with rain on and off since Wednesday.  I would say there is about a 50/50 chance the race will be kept on the turf, but it is extremely windy this morning, which might allow for the course to dry out enough, we shall see.  Forecast calls for the wind to continue all day, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60's.  As of 9:00 this morning, the turf is listed as "yielding", and race #7 and #10 have already been taken off the turf.  If the race is taken off the turf, it will be run at the same distance on the main track.

David Cohen gets the mount this time out on Margano.  Jose Lezcano, who rode Margano in his debut, will be on the morning line favorite, Liquidity Trap, trained by Chad Brown.  I really cannot criticize Mr. Lezcano too much on his ride on Margano first out, I will just say I am happy with the change to Mr. Cohen.  Mr. Cohen is currently tied for third in wins at the Belmont Fall meet, and this past Thursday he notched his 1000th career victory, doing it on the Belmont Park turf course.

I expect Margano to greatly improve of his debut race.  The one mile distance for this race is what his connections had hoped for in his debut, it just didn't come up.  I believe Margano's debut was just for him to experience everything for the first time, call it a extended work-out, if you will.  I fully expect a completely different race for Margano this time out.  I love the fact that it is a smaller field and that Margano drew the outside post.  While I don't expect Margano to be on the lead, I do expect him to break well and get to the front and stalk the leaders, and come flying home in a mad dash to the finish line.

On paper, Liquidity Trap and  Knock Rock seem to be the ones to beat. Out of those two, Liquidity Trap is my biggest concern, coming off a second place finish on this course back on September 18th.  Knock Rock is coming off a fifth place finish in the Grade III Pilgrim Stakes here at Belmont two weeks ago.  Knock Rock is being raced too often and should be given a couple more weeks off, this being his third race in less then a month and fifth race in two months, too much for a growing two year old in my humble opinion.  The two wildcards are Festive Spirit and McKinley Square.  Festive Spirit is a first time starter, being ridden by Johnny Velazquez and trained by Todd Pletcher.  Mckinley Square will be making his second start for Darley Stables, ridden by Eddie Castro and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin.  Rounding out the field are Captain Fantasic, Matisse, and Odom.  Odom being trained by the disgraced Richard Dutrow, who was just banned for ten years this past week, which goes into affect on October 18th (pending appeal).  I will just say, I couldn't be happier on this judgement and I applaud the powers to be for getting rid of this so-called man.  I am sure Indian Tale feels the same way.  Wishing Odom and all a safe race today.

So with all that said, I will go with Margano winning the race, Liquidity Trap in second, and McKinley Square rounding out the top three.

So, I am now out the door for my trek down to Belmont Park on what could be an historic day.  If Margano breaks his maiden, I could be wrong here, but I believe it will be the first time in the history of the sport that four full brothers all registered wins.  If someone can prove me wrong, the first one who does so, I will gladly mail you out a full set of four Kentucky Derby glasses from Barbaro's Kentucky Derby Victory.  I haven't researched this at all, just going by my memory here, lol.  Good luck.

  1. I looked at the field the other day during art class LOL, I believe Margano could get the win. I whole heartedly agree about Dutrow, as my mom said, he should've gotten banned for life. Come on, 69 rule infractions, probably half for drugging the poor horses (big brown was drugged)!!!

  2. Thank goodness that Dutrow is banned! It's years overdo, but at least now, all of his horses can finally be free of him. Margano is going to do great, and I wish him the best of luck and a safe race for all of the horses. I hope, also, that Knock Rock will get a well-deserved rest.

  3. I think you are probably right on your bet Greg. I don't think there has ever been four full siblings who've even all made it to the track!

    Have fun today!

  5. Off of the top of my head the only other possible combo of mare/stallion who MIGHT have produced four winning offspring from four full sibs would have been Fair Play and Mahubah. I know they had at least three stakes winners - the filly (who became an important broodmare in her own right) Masda (who became the third dam of Triple Crown winner Assault and ancestress of Stay Thirsty on his dam side), Man o' War, and the colt My Play who became an important sire but was always in the shadow of his magnificent older full brother. The thing is - I think they produced other full sibs to these three, but have no idea of their race records (if any)?

I think Margano will do well today! I think he learned a lot in his first race!

From what I understand, Tagg does not overly push his two year olds - he wants his colts and fillies to be healthy happy sound three year olds - and he views two year old races primarily as learning experiences and as fitness/bottom improvers.

Maybe that is why Margano's jockey in the first race did not push him?

  6. Wonderful and gutsy run by Margano! I was wondering why I couldn't find him, and was like oh, he's on the lead, lol. I'm thinking dirt will be better for him, or just firmer turf, he's worked faster on dirt than the fractions he was making. I think he did great, though!

  7. Oh and just to mention - he finished second behind favourite Liquidity Trap. Good race.

  8. YAY! Still not a win but all things considered 2nd isn't terrible its a fair sized step up from his first race. Haven't seen the replay yet but I'm thrilled. He certainly seems to be going in the right direction. He'll get em next time. I understand that Nicanor may be on his way back to Fair Hill to start training. Good Luck to him.

  9. That was a WONDERFUL race by Margano -- I was surprised that he was permitted to take the lead. I think they are trying to learn about him, as he is learning about racing. In the end, the favorite passed him, but it was close!
Margano looked very professional in the post parade and loading into the gate as well as tall and gorgeous. Loved hearing the HRTV announcer say he was the "danger of the race." He almost won it -- more experienced horses behind him as he took a solid 2nd. He'll do it next time!!! He's going to be a good horse! And he loves to run!

Mark your calendars for 4 weeks from now.

  13. Margano did very well - led most of the way on a yielding turf while being challenged most of the way by the colt who came in third, and was beaten right at the end by a well breed El Prado gray colt.

So in his first race he was way back and came up with a great close at the end - in this one he led most of the way.

Looks like he will be a very versatile colt who can be rated, and can make his run from anywhere in the field!

Again in this race for the second time he faced stakes quality colts and looked like he belonged without a problem.

Next time out I think he will break his maiden!

  14. Margano did wonderful! Oh, my goodness. . . . he was amazing! He loves dirt, if his workouts suggest anything, so I would hope to see him ondirt next time . . . for him to lead most of the way and still put up that kind of race, wow! He is something else! I love you, Margano!

  15. I just saw the replay. Wow! what a race. In his first race he ran a bit like a Zenyatta and in this one he almost pulled off a Nicanor. It appears he did learn and I know it won't be long before we see him in the Winners Circle.

  17. In the race replay on Blood Horse, the announcer was calling him Mar-gone-o. Is it pronounced this way or Mar-gun-o? Great race either way. If you recall in one of big brother's races, the announcer called him Bar-bear-o.

  21. I taped the TVG coverage of the race and watched HRTV -- in each case, an announcer said he was his choice or "the danger" of the race. Word is beginning to get around about our MARgano. ON TVG they said that he had a decent debut where he was checked several times and that as a "full to Barbaro, plus Nicanor and Lentenor, it is a good family".

I was not expecting him to take and keep the lead the way he did. I, too, was looking for him without success until I realized that he was the one out front! He is very versatile! This is going to be so exciting!

  26. Daffodil, I am a Lions Fan . . . . I'm glad to see that you're content with their loss, and I have to give credit to the 49ers for their game, both teams played well. As a Lions fan, I'm content that they have won at least one game, compared to their unfortunate record of 0 for 16 a few years back. The race for Margano was wonderful, and it made my day. Take care, everyone. The Breeder's Cup is approaching . . . Go Havre de Grace in the Classic, give those boys a run for their money.

  27. AQL, I meant no harm. As a long time 49rs fan (I live in N. California), I was thrilled at the win, but always sorry when a perfect record is ended no matter who it is. Margano's performance was stellar -- he tried so hard and held on for 2nd. There was a bit of bumping going on in the final furlong between Liquidity Trap and Knock Rock and Margano. Our boy was undaunted and held his position as long as he possibly could. SOO PROUD of him!!

You look so much like Barbaro. He must be watching over you, Margano.

Glad to see a link on the comment section so I could watch the replay since I wasn't home all day Saturday.

Keep it up, Margano, and you will soon be in the winner's circle. That will make my day.

  31. Ah, I see. No hard feelings, my friend. Margano is going to be one spectacular horse, just like all of his brothers. I look at images of Dynaformer and can't help but wonder how such a "ill-tempered" (he is said to be bad tempered) horse sires these gentle and affectionate little guys. Must be La Ville Rogue's temper . . . I can't wait to see Margano run again, and Lentenor as well. Nicanor might be returning soon, so I am really excited. So proud of our boys.

  38. Thanks guys, he was a great horse, and he touched the hearts of everyone around him with how large of a fight he put up. Even our vet was near tears. He did have several good weeks, and Sunday a week or so ago he felt well enough to canter around the barn when we let him out, so it was a little bit of a shock when we went out saturday and he could hardly walk. He will be sorely missed among the people who knew him. I bet Barbaro, Jimmy, and Secretariat are up there complaining about laminitis and playing right now ;).

  39. Hi!

In Margano's last race he had on the pink cloth
(have no idea what this cloth is actually called in horse racing language) with the
number 8 which is similar to Barbaro's color and number when he won the Kentucky Derby of 2006.

    How amazing!

So sorry to hear that Jimmy passed away. Do you have any photos of him so we can see him? Sounds like he was a joy to the people who love him.

I went to a barn this weekend and saw a horse, who had a sign on the fence that said "Be careful, I bite," but I ignored the sign and patted him and spoke baby talk to him and he didn't bite. He really is a nice horse afterall
as he was so friendly towards me.

Awaiting for Margano's next race plus Lentenor and Nicanor.

  47. That must have been terrible for Greg. I am devastated whenever I see a breakdown in a televised race to the point where I cannot stand to watch another race for months or even longer (it was years before I could watch another race after Go for Wand in the Distaff) - cannot imagine how much worse it would be to see one in person. A true nightmare.

Good luck to Lentenor! I will try to find the race to watch on the internet this weekend.

  50. Better safe than sorry for Lentenor's scratch. I saw Go For Wand's Distaff last year on Youtube because I hadn't heard of her before. I was horrified when it happened, four years before I was born in 1994. I saw Barbaro and Eight Bells's breakdowns from the television . . . . . . . I sobbed hysterically for days. Racehorse Memorial Wall is a site that posts horses who have passed away from racing injuries. I go there everyday to pay my respects. It is the least I can do. Good luck to those who are racing today, have a safe trip. Jimmy Cricket, I am sorry for your loss . . .

I've been worried about him, since I know all too well the trauma of seeing a horse breakdown. Whose your Classic pick? I'm for Havre de Grace and Stay Thirsty. I love Uncle Mo, but I think he's being pushed too far, not in the distance, but in time. Only two races before a race as huge as the Classic, and Repole is saying that Uncle Mo is better than all of the other horses in the field. Maybe he is, but still, I think they would've been better putting him the mile and then aiming for the Classic next year. Stay Thirsty has earned this, and he deserves just as much a shot as Uncle Mo for this Classic. Good luck to everyone running this weekend, stay safe.

  74. Hi!

    What is wrong with DynaKing/Gifted?

My prayers goes out to him.

Where can I read about him?

Great on Lentenor racing once again. Thanks
    for the information.

    Thank you!

  75. Lisa from Maine;

Gifted seems to have laminitis, yet I have also heard that he has severe abcesses in his hooves. He is doing better, I hear, but still, we won't know if he'll make a full recovery. But Gifted's a strong horse, so I believe he will be alright. There is information on the Heart of Tuscon website. And it is wonderful about Lentenor. He is a turf horse, like his daddy, and I think he'll really prove himself on turf. Good luck, Lentenor, we love you.

  76. Bonjour Lentenor,

Good luck in your race today at Laurel Park.

I hope that TVG shows the race.

If not, then I hope someone places a link here so your fans can see your race.

    Thank you!

  82. Gifted, please be alright. We all love you so much. And let's hope for the best for Gifted and Lentenor and Margano and Nicanor. I am suffering from A LACK OF BARBARO BROTHER SYNDROME! And I'm so worried about Gifted.

  85. I agree with Jiminy Cricket. Good luck, Rapid Redux. Finish safely. Just do your best. That is all we expect of you. You've made history for the 19 straight wins, but 20 would guarantee your spot in history by surpassing Zenyatta. The field is down to five? That is a small field.

P.S. Can't wait to see Margano and Lenny run again, Margano will win it this time, I have a feeling he's gonna be a stakes horse. I also have a feeling from his works that he likes dirt better, here's hoping for the Derby, and finishing up what his big bro should've!

    How is Dynaking doing?

    Any more news on him?

    Thank you!

  90. Lise, Dyna King is doing better. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you, Jiminy cricket, for the information about Margano. I lost a horse today to colic, he was 29. Rest in peace, Nugget. Say hi to Barbaro and everyone else up there for us.

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  91. I am so sorry for your loss, Quail, I'm sure he's having fun playing with Jimmy and Barbaro up there right now, and telling all the others how much he loves you. One thing I can tell you, is it won't get any easier for awhile, I still cry over Jimmy sometimes, my thought are with you. RIP Nugget I am glad Dynaking seems to be doing better, laminitis is a terrible thing.

  92. when are these brothers going to run again?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Indeed it is. And thank you, Jiminy Cricket. Hopefully, our boys are up there together. I am relieved as well that Dunaking is doing better. Nugget suffered laminitis three times, but in the end, it was colic that took him to horse heaven.

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wow, Nugget was one tough cookie to survive laminitis 3 times! Was he your only horse? He led a nice long life!
    Jiminy Cricket
P.s. anyone else notice how many comments there are?!?! Crazy!!!!! No other blog post has had near this many comments!

    ReplyDelete
  95. He was one of two. My Thoroughbred, American Quail, survived a broken leg twice. He's 17 now, and he's out there alone in the barn. He didn't like Nugget too much, but they were still buddies. There are a lot of comments on here, you're right. The more the better, huh?

  100. 100th comment, Marganos work was awesome, and your very welcome. Hope he races soon.
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  101. How about that?! We're in triple digets! Margano's work was on dirt, so if he's pulling times like that, imagine what he'll do in a race if he has the right rider and the right position. Barclay Tagg's website would be the best place to check for Margano's racing.

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  102. Happy that DynaKing is doing better, very sad to hear of Nugget's passing.

Margano's workout was fantastic. I think with a break in post positions, etc. he will be breaking his maiden next time out. I have noticed colts he has raced against running in stakes races such as the Remsen. No question in my mind that he is going to be a stakes runner.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I couldn't agree more. Margano's gonna be a stakes horse, and thank you for your kindness. Margano is my 2012 Derby pick if he makes it in. Hopefully, he does. Who else here has Margano and/or Union Rags as their Derby picks?

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  104. Margano in the derby, he'll be my pick. Non-negotiable.

I don't gamble, but it's fun to pick the winning horse anyway. :p

Any other horse I like will be in my "picks for *2nd* place"
    rofl

I can't help myself there. I love my Barbaro brothers. :p

    -Arem

    ReplyDelete
  105. Same here, Arem. Margano all the way, and then Union Rags preferably in second or third. It's gonna be all Margano in Barbaro fashion if Margano gets in. I don't gamble either, but as you said, it's ajoy to pick the winning horse, but epsecially if it's A Barbaro brother.

  106. Hi!

Thanks for the information regarding Margano's
    workout.

Hope to see him race soon as well as Lentenor.

    Lise from Maine

    ReplyDelete
  107. Very interesting that Margano and Union Rags will both be racing at Gulfstream Park's upcoming meet. I think they will perhaps meet before the Ky Derby. If Tagg points him that way, its pretty much a given he will have to run in the Florida Derby against Union Rags (i think hes a sure bet there) unless they ship back to New York for the Wood. I love Margano, but at this point Union Rags is far more accomplished. Margano will have to make a huge step upward to beat him. I am keeping an eye on the stakes nomiations for Gulfstream to see if Margano gets nominated and will post if I see anything.

Also, Laurel Park has cancelled turf racing for the remainder of 2011 due to surface concerns. We have had around 30 inches of rain in the past 3 months, so Lentenor will not be racing here. If he runs he will have to ship to PA, which is really right down the street from Fair Hill or Aquaduct. I am not sure if the Delacourt stable ships to Florida for the winter. There was no mention of it in my Fair hill updates.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Thank you, Criminal Type for the information. I would have to agree that Union Rags is far more accomplished. I would love to see Union Rags and Margano racing against each other. It could be the Affirmed/Alydar rivalry again or maybe the Dr. Fager / Damascus. Or the Blind Luck/Havre de Grace challenges. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

  110. Thanks, Jiminy Cricket. It's wonderful news! I always thought Lentenor preferred turf over dirt?

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  111. They always work him on the dirt or all weather for some reason. I think it would be rather confusing for him.
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  112. Agreed. Lentenor is a turf runner, and he's made that as clear as he can. Why they work him on dirt or all weather, I will never know. Maybe it makes turf running easier for him?

    ~American Quail Lover

    ReplyDelete
  113. I just checked the nominations for the Dania Beach Stakes (1 mile on the turf at Gulfstream Park) and Margano is NOT on the list. The next big three year old stakes is the Holy Bull on January 29th at one mile on the main track. Nominations for this race close on January 14th so it will be a while before we know if he will go in this. If I was Tagg, and I clearly am not, I would put him in an allowance race at a mile or maybe a little more, on the dirt AsaP. Gulfstream Park draws a lot of top horses and trainers and anywhere Margano starts will be against tough competition. Ive heard it said Gulfstream is like Saratoga that its Maiden Special Weight races often line up like allowance races in their draws. All the usual suspects show up.

Meanwhile, it's winter here in Maryland and I have just started my horse (3/4 Arabian 1/4 Morgan) who is 3.5 yrs old and 8 weeks past castration, into endurance training. We moved from one barn to another and since he is no longer intact, he is experiencing close interaction with other horses for the first time in his life. I watched them all take off across the field yesterday and my guy just stood there for a few seconds then took off after them. In what seemed like 7 or 8 strides he was in the lead. Too bad he is not a Thoroughbred because he is really fast.

  114. Wow, I posted with Aim this time instead of google because its been giving me grief and it actually published my name. LOL, Crap I been identified ! Anyway, I am also Criminal Type : )

  115. FYI,

If everything goes as planned, look for Margano to race this Saturday at Gulfstream.

    Godspeed Margano...

I want to thank everyone for keeping the blog going with your comments while I took a break, greatly appreciated!

I will have a look at Margano's race once the entries are up.

Also, I will be auctioning off some of my horse racing memorabilia in another blog to follow. Every penny will go to help HEART of Tucson and Dyna King/Gifted.

    Thanks again everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Also,

Nicanor and Lentenor are both at Tampa Bay Downs. Look for Lentenor to race very soon, and Nicanor to make his return in early Spring. Margano is at Mr. Tagg's barn in West Palm Beach :)

  117. Hi, Criminal Type, and you don't need to worry. WE won't go around giving you name to people, trust us. Good luck with your horse also. Tell him hello for me. Welcome back!

Hoping Margano does indeed race this saturday! He'll win this time....
Also looking forward to the possibility of another Lentenor race soon!

I miss Nicanor. Very very glad that he will be returning in the spring. I love all the brothers, but Nicanor will always have a very special place in my heart right next to my beloved Barbaro.

    -Arem

    ReplyDelete
  119. Agreed, Arem. Margano will do wonderfully, as always, though I will admit, a maiden win sure would be nice. And for Lentenor, I'm estatic about him racing soon, and Nicanor, I'm thrilled. Welcome back again, Greg. Happy Wednesday / Pearl Harbor Day. I'm glad, too, that we are no longer at war with Japan or the other Axis powers (former Axis powers) as we were in World War II. Bless Japan to a successful and full recovery from the earthquake and tsunami. Good luck on Saturday, Margano.

  126. What a wonderful race by Margano! Wow, that was a long and sustained drive for a two year old! I think he has a lot of stamina and will do quite well as a three year old as the distances stretch out! I can't wait to see where he goes from here!

He really outclassed the field today. :-)

(If they want to keep him on grass I think he will do great at 10 furlongs in the Virginia Derby, Secretariat, etc. - lots of distance races for him to shine in - and wouldn't it be nice to see an American colt beat the Euros in the big classic North American grass races this summer???)

Hope the colt who was eased in the race is OK...
