Two Sons, Two Races...

Dynaformer, the twenty seven year old great Stallion of Three Chimneys, has two sons that have races today.  Five year old Lentenor (Dynaformer-La Ville Rouge) and fifteen year old Dyna King (Dynaformer-Rekindled) are those two sons.  Lentenor will be in a race to further his career on the track, and Dyna King  is in a race fighting for his life, as he begins a new chapter today in his continuing fight against that damn disease, laminitis. So, as we are cheering on Lentenor today while he returns to stakes company at Tampa Bay Downs, let's also think of Dyna King as he will be in Arizona getting stem cell and hoof treatments.

Dynaformer, Dyna King, and Lentenor on the track:

Dynaformer, before his victory in the Jersey Derby (Grade II) at Garden State Racetrack, back on May 30, 1988:

Dyna King, in his last race of his career at Rillito Racetrack, back on February 10, 2007:

Lentenor, after his victory at Tampa Bay Downs, back on December 23, 2011:

A look at both races...

Lentenor

Lentenor returns to the track today in race #9 at Tampa Bay Downs, post time is about 4:10 for the Grade III Tampa Bay Stakes.  This will be Lentenor's first race since his record setting performance back on December 23rd, when he set the track record on the same course and same distance, covering the 1 1/16 miles on the turf in 1:40.95.  This will be Lentenor's third race in stakes company in his lightly raced career, having finished 7th in the Grade III Kent Stakes at Delaware Park on September 25, 2010 (a race I throw out due to the fact I believe he was racing with a undetected shoulder injury), and a 4th place finish in the Grade I Florida Derby back on March 20, 2010.

Today's race will have a full field of twelve,Luis Garcia gets the return mount on the Leigh Delacour trained Lentenor, they will be breaking from the unlucky outside post (#12) in the race.

What can I say?  This field in this race is incredibly tough to predict and to handicap, it truly is a race that five or six colts can win.  Will Lentenor overcome the outside post and return to the winner's circle?  If Luis can get Lentenor up close in a stalking position by the first turn and keep him out of traffic problems, then I believe Lentenor has what it takes to come charging down the stretch and be right there for the victory.  This race is impossible to handicap and I have given up trying.  I will just sit back while watching the race unfold, hoping it is a safe race for all, and would love to see Lentenor in the winner's circle after the race.  With that said, my top three in the race are Lentenor, Allie's Event, and Successful Mission.  Two wildcards would be the Graham Motion trained Hoofit, and the Dale Romans trained colt Guys Reward.  The class of the field is Duke of Mischief, with earning's over $1.7 million, the question will be if he can return to form on the turf, I am going to say not today, we shall see.

In light of what Dyna King has gone through and continues to go through, today's race for Lentenor puts everything into perspective for me.  I just want a safe race for all, and of course would love to see Lentenor get his first stakes victory for Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Leigh and Arnaud Delacour, and of course, for Lentenor!  I am sure Barbaro will be looking down cheering his baby brother on!

The field for today's race:

A replay of Lentenor's record setting race back on December 23rd:

Photos of Lentenor:

****UPDATED FEBRUARY 26, 2012****

Lentenor finishes 5th, just two lengths behind the winner, longshot Roman Tiger.

A good effort by Lentenor to stay up for 5th place. The outside post really hurt him today, since I believe he used up a little too much energy to get up to third going into the first turn. A perfect ride by Luis, he stalked perfectly in third for the whole race and was in a perfect position coming into the stretch. He just didn't have that burst of speed, he did well to hold onto 5th in this very evenly matched talented field of twelve. BTW, to show you how much the outside post hurt Lentenor, he traveled 52 feet more then the winner! That right there says it all!

Bravo to Lentenor for his game effort today, with a better post postition, he would have most likely got the win or have been very close.

Just click on the link below to see a replay of Lentenor's race. After clicking on the link, click on the 25th in the calender section, then click on race #9. You can view both the regular view or head-on view. Remember, Lentenor is on the far outside.

REPLAY OF LENTENOR'S RACE

Dyna King/Gifted

I first heard of Dyna King back in December of 2010, after he had just been rescued from the Arizona desert.  He was found in horrible shape, starving, emaciated, barely able to stand, let alone walk.  He was rescued by Judy Glore, President of HEART of Tucson equine rescue.  For those not familiar with Dyna King's story, here is a story I wrote about him on Bloodhorse back in December of 2010:

"In The Spirit Of Christmas"

Link: http://familyofbarbaro.blogspot.com/2011/03/in-spirit-of-christmas.html

He has been to hell and back, with his will to survive and all the love and support by Judy, the volunteers of HEART, and everyone that has helped with donations, Dyna King wants to live, and he knows he is loved by everyone that his story/life has touched.  He has fought everyday to survive and was doing amazing for so long, but, a few months ago, that evil laminitis reared it's ugly head and Dyna King had major setbacks.  With Judy's love and commitment to Dyna King every minute of everyday, he is improving one day at a time.

I would like to print Judy's words from this week (via Facebook), on what Dyna King is facing and how wonderful so many people have been in helping with his plight.  With that said, the following is by Judy Glore, President of HEART of Tucson equine rescue:

Dyna King/Gifted...

"This Saturday is the day for Gifted.  Dr. Dryden will be here at one of our best barns in Tucson to help him with his feet. We have vets and farriers attending to see what the treatment will be for this boy. I can't believe this is coming true for Dyna King. I am so greatful to all the doctors that are helping him and most of all the flight is being donated by him on his frequent flyer miles. We could never afford this kind of treatment for him or the chance to save his life with out the help of all of you, and the vets who really care. THANK YOU EVERYONE that has had faith and stood by this boy.

Some one told me the other day that lots of great horses have been lost to this disease like Secretariat, Barbaro and many others, I said the doctors didn't know what they know now either. We don't ever give up hope we just push to save the ones we can now, and give them a good life of love, carrorts and laughter. We still have so much to learn and every horse that has died before them has taught us just one more thing that might be the key to saving many.

Night everyone, Saturday here is going to be the tell all for our beloved Dyna King. What a strong angel he is.  A big thank you goes to Jen at Three Chimneys. She was able to make the call to Rood and Riddle that got them on board for Dyna King. This guy truly has some amazing angels around him. Four more days to go.  Thank you everyone for hanging in with us here. We have been working so hard for this boy and your prayers and thoughts have helped us to push over that edge that we never thought would come for him. I just can't thank you all enough. I really believe that all of your thoughts and prayers have made this happen. God Bless you all and I hope and pray that all of you get the same blessings that Gifted has brought to us back to you ten fold. I know he would wish this for you as well.
We have lots of updates for you all tonight on Gifted. I am having trouble uploading the pictures and videos so our wonderful webmaster Greg Ambrose will do it for us tonight. Lol, Greg you are awesome!!!! I know everyone wants to see what our sweetheart did today and thank you for helping us to make that happen. He was the Rock Star I knew he would be. Dyna King gets to meet Dr. Dryden tomorrow morning. And we are doing stem cell, and hoof treatment for him. This guy gets to have the dream of a life time come true, and now the rest will be up to him, but with his will power I feel really good about this. Will Power, Great Doctors, and more love and faith from America he has got one hell of a chance here to have a good life again.

I cried tonight when I had to leave him there and he whinnied at me and tried to call me back. This is like leaving your kid at the hospital and telling them you will be back first thing in the morning. All too familar for me.
He came off the trailer like we were going to the gates. He was so proud and walked out so well. He followed me like a puppy and loved meeting Mrs. Rogers the barn owner and his staff.  Unreal is all I can say. He is in a stall with mattress floor. The place is a dream for horses.
Dyna King trusts us and knows we will only put him in a good situation. he is amazing that way especially since he came out of such horrific conditions. Horses are the most forgiving animal here on earth. We can never validate that trust with them. My spelling is horrible I need to go to bed, lol. Love you all and thank you for the prayers for Dyna King/Gifted.
We are getting closer to the day for Gifted.  Here is the link to where he will be spending the night and waiting for Dr. Dryden to come work with us and the staff at Bandaleros for his treatment. We will have our local vets there that want to attend and farriers that will learn what they can from this amazing vet. We will try to film as much as we can for this day to share with you all. wish our boy good luck, and dreams do come true if you pray hard enough, and work to make it happen. Gods Speed Gifted, you get the chance boy now lets make it happen !!!!!"

Judy, you are a true saint, and the love and hard work you dedicate everyday to Dyna King and all the others at your rescue are truly blessed to have you in their lives, thank you!
So, as we watch Lentenor's race today, I am asking everyone to also think of Dyna King, who at the same time, will be starting a race for his life.  These two sons of Dynaformer mean the world to me, and I just pray they both win their respective races today, and everyday that follows in the future.
The ongoing care for Dyna King is expensive, and any donation you can make would help greatly!  I thank you from the bottom of my heart for any donation you can make, every dollar helps, thank you!

****UPDATED FEBRUARY 26, 2012****

Dr. Dryden's interview after treating Dyna King/Gifted with stem cells and new shoes. A huge thank you to Dr. Dryden, Rood & Riddle, Three Chimney's, and everyone that helped with donations to make yesterday possible. Dyna King has such a long road ahead of him to fight this evil laminitis, but, if ever a horse could do it, Dyna King is that horse! A huge thank you to Judy, she is truly Dyna King's guardian angel. Continued prayers for Dyna King...

  1. Thanks for the updates, Greg! I am looking forward to Lentenor's racing today and will also be hoping for a good day for Dyna King also. Thank you for sharing the great photos, also!

  2. I can't help but feel that this is the year for the bros. Margano on the Derby trail, hopefully the 2012 Derby winner ;). I think Lentenor will be a stakes performer all year, and we will have to wait and see about nick. Maybe all 3 will be in the breeders cup! Wishful thinking, it would be fun to see nick and len run against each other, don't ya think? Maybe one of them will even bring home an eclipse! Whatever happens, I will always love Barbaro and his brothers. Reading that about Dyna King made me sad thinking about Jimmy, I hope they can Sabe him, but then I just think about how it was with Jimmy, and I know the odds are veryyyyy long. Jimmy appeared to be well on the way to recovery one week, we turned him out and he was catering around, but a week and a half later the unthinkable happened and we lost him.

  3. Very moving, Greg. Very heartfelt. Everyone is sending their most positive energy to Dyna King/Gifted, and of course to the amazing Lentenor.

I always thought Lentenor never got the flow of races at the right time that would have brought him to his talent level. Wrong timing, undetected injuries, unbalanced campaigns. But I think he still can show what we only glimpsed before. Regardless, with the great affection I have for Lentenor, I only wish that he be comfortable and safe, and find a way to excel.

  5. Beautiful blog Greg--very well done. I will miss Lentenor's race Live today but I wish him well. It is such a tough field, but I feel confident he has been prepared well and is sitting on a big race if he gets a clean trip. Safe, sound, and fun most of all.

Including Dyna King here was very touching. I will be sending in another donation on his behalf and am pulling for his recovery as we all are. Those photos are so special.

Good Luck today to Lentenor---I hope he comes flying!!!

  9. When I see the picture of Dynaformer, two things I wonder. Did D. Wayne Lucas saddle up Dynaformer or did Kiaran McLaughlin get all of the fun. And the other...was Dynaformer an edgy colt? From this picture, he looked like he was all business. But pictures can be misleading. Dynaformer may have been a creature that was fun to be around.

Deletion before this was bad grammar.

  11. Now that HRTV finally showed the race. Lentenor didn't really fire today it looked like to me, but he finished 5th beat only 2 lengths, he stepped it up a bit today, and if he fires next time he has the ability to be a stakes winner. He just didn't display his usual turn of foot today, I think he probably should've had a race in between this and his last, but they couldn't get an allowance to fill. Maybe next out, he is definetely a stakes contender, and he lost hardly any ground in the stretch. He did seem to pick up a bit of speed late.

  13. Will the fountain of youth be televised tomorrow? I was able to watch the Tampa Bay Stakes today on the computer thanks to a link that was given on ABR. Also, is there a story behind Martita Sangrita?

  14. Yes the FOY is tomorrow, the Factor looked great today! Love that horse <3. Lentenor just didnt seem to gave his normal kick today, at least not to me. We just never can get a good post with him, can we? But, to me, with him, outside is better than inside, at least that way he's got a fighting chance, instead of a wall of horses. BTW, Thiskyhasnolimit was pulled up and vanned off he track today, ya I'm kind of getting off the topic of the bros here, arent i? but we love all race horses here, right? Ya, I think I'm pretty much right lol.

    Thanks Greg for this post.

Hopefully the stem cell treatment will do him wonders. Thank God for all the loving, caring persons who are assisting him. They are truly angels.

He knows that he is loved and that is what counts. Judy is such a wonderful person to give of her time and show him love and comfort.

And I've heard that Dynaformer has actually bitten off fingers....A mean spirit seems to be present in him....But I must say, Dynaformer is beautiful....Margano has gotten his dark coat color from him. 31. Yall remember that pesky little mike from last year? His 5-race win streak was snapped today. By who you ask? By the one and only Doubles Partner coming off a 10 month layoff. Lentenor will win his stakes yet. BTW this was in the Canadian turf stakes at gulfstream, where little Mikey win streak got started as he defeated nicanor.
    Jiminy cricket
P.s. we all remember doubles partner slithering through on the rail to defeat Lentenor in that allowance a couple of years ago, right? May the gods be with you Lenny, and you will be a stakes winner.

  32. I remember this all too well, Jiminy Cricket. When I heard of Little Mike's defeat, I was astounded....and then, when I heard of who defeated him, I was baffled. The one who denied Lentenor a win defeated one who denied Nicanor a win....what were the odds of two rivals of two brothers meeting?! Nicanor worked out today, I believe. I have heard little of Margano lately.

  33. Lot's of good racing the past couple of weeks. The outside post really was Lentenor's downfall, had he not had to run those extra 52 feet he would have been on or near the lead at the wire. He will have his day.

Jiminy & AQL, I too remember the victories of Doubles Partner and Little Mike over Nicanor and Lentenor. Also, I think Margano's absense from the work tab is most likely due to a growth spurt.

The Jacksons had a filly win at Tampa on saturday. She is a 3 yr old filly named Ageless by Successful Appeal out of a Point Given mare. Broke her maiden at first asking going 6.5 furlongs. Good job Ms. Delacour.

I am very excited about Michael Matz's colts Teeth of the Dog, a very cleverly named son of Tail of the Cat and of course Union Rag's. His win in the Fountain of Youth was impressive to say the least. Hansens win in the Gotham was equally as visually impressive although a full second slower then Union Rags ran the same distance the week before. I love this time of year.

Unfortunatly, the war of attrician has begun with horse dropping off the Derby trail due to injury. Out of Bounds is the latest dropping out with a condylar fracture which will require surgery. Algorithms is out, Consortium is out, Junebugred is out. There are a couple more whos names I cant recall at the moment. All who have dropped off are expected to return to racing which is a very good thing. That being said, I hear that Thiskyhasnolimit is doing well after having his ankle fused after his injury at Fair Grounds. I hope he makes it.

Lastly, Daffodil, Dynaformer is my no means sweet in any way whatsoever. Whoever said the pony in the above pioture was probably terrified was probably right. Dynaformer was telling him, watch it pale face, I'll take a chunk outta you. The biting off of fingers DID happen, although it was only one finger not multiples. That whole line is a little crazy, like Halo's and Hoist the Flag's. Some lines seem to carry a vicious streak and Dynaformer has it. I believe everything I've heard about him.

Lastly, Best wishes to Dyna King/Gifted with his stem cell therepay, I hope for the best for him.

  34. It's that time of year to see some amazing races like Union Rag's or cross names off the Derby Trail from injury. Hansen was impressive, but he looked more fully extended than Union Rags and he clearly was just playing around. El Pardino is looking like one of the top names, as well as Shackleford's doppleganger. Might be a sign, Shack payed out nicely for my trifecta in the preakness. I am interested to see how Sabercat returns, and like Mark Valeski and Take Charge Indy as my outsiders. Alpha should do well enough, and I would really love to see Howe Great make the transition back to dirt to see if he's as awesome as he is on grass. Last year, Animal Kingdom was my longshot win bet for the Derby because he was the best looking of all the horses that I saw on Derby week, that and ArchArchArch.

What another terrible story I just came across on Thoroughbred Times... 11 horses and one dog found staring to death, one a 6 year old Thoroughbred Moon's Treasure, who is in particularly bad shape. More prayers to send out, for him, for Dyna King, and Theskyhasnolimit. And thank god no more horses or jockeys were injured in the 7 horse spill that was on Bloodhorse the other day.

  35. I contacted Mr. Tagg and Robin, who responded with the news that Margano is back in light training. He should be breezing again in about three weeks. A very long spring campaign is in order for him, from what was said. Animal Kingdom won his four-year-old debut, so we should respect a good season for him. I believe Union Rags has a good shot at the Derby, as does Hansen.

  36. Hi!

I just read the article on the 11 starving horses and the one dog. That is disgusting.

    Who owns these animals?

They ought to be indicted, arrested, and convicted plus end up in jail for this outrageous behavior. I rarely get angry but this one actually made me angry to say the least.

Additionally, where is Margano? What is he doing or not doing?

My hopes of his derby win is dwindling fast.

What about Nicanor? Hope to see him back on the tracks soon.

    Thank you!

  37. Lisa, I think Marganos Derby ship has sailed. For him to make enough graded earnings to get into the gate at Churchill Downs in virtually one race would be a neat feat. He would have to take down the Arkansas Derby, The Louisiana Derby or the Blue Grass to do that and he just doesnt have enough time if he is going to begin breezing in three weeks. That would put him in one of those races, that he would have to win, off two workouts at most. That is never gonna happen.

I read the article about the horses and dog found starving to death on south florida. This is not the first time either. The found another group a few weeks ago headed to slaughter. It's very bad down there with remote areas of swampland and deviant religious sects that practice things like animal sacrifice...It's pretty chilling, really.

  38. The odds of Margano making it into the Derby are slim, but perhaps the Preakness could be done. But I have not given up hope quite yet. Some of the greatest champions did not compete or win in the Triple Crown Races. Forego, who raced in the TC with Secretariat, became a champion, as did Cigar and Seabiscuit. But let us wait and see. Miracles can and will happen. Margano is fine, he is back in light training, and will begin breezing in around three weeks.

  39. The chance of the Derby are pretty slim indeed, the BC Classic though, is still very much in the picture ;). And maybe Lenny makes the BC Mile or BC Turf. The Preakness and Belmont are still very much in the picture too, remember he is TC nominated, so they are obviously going to try, and in the horse racing world, all you can do is try. Expect Nicanor in 2-3 weeks probably, and Lentenor should hopefully come back with in the next month as well. I doubt Margano is too out of shape, not like he took 5 months off, I wonder why they gave him a break? They also told someone he is in line for a tough spring campaign.

I will try again later today.

TVG announced today that Zenyatta had her baby - a colt.

That is disgusting that horse slaughter is allowed at all. These animals deserve our respect.

    This is an outrage.

  50. The latest on Dyna King is good news. He was revisited by Dr Dryden last Friday and there is new hoof growth. The Dr said everything looked good and Judy said there is still more work to be done. Next up is maggots to eat away the dead tissue. All in all the Dr said he was very positive and Dyna King has a good chance.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wait, Penny, maggots to eat away the dead tissue?! I have never heard of that before. I am glad that Gifted is improving. Keep on fighting, Gifted, we know you can do it.

  52. I know AQL, I did not know it was used in the present in this matter, but that is what his next step is going to be. Judy said they are waiting on the shipment to come in. Evidently it is part of Dr Dryden's treatment. It is interesting that they are combining new technology with treatments of the past, like I like to call it "the olden days". Gifted is quite the fighter.

  53. Working in a hospital, sometimes (though not often) medical maggots or medical leaches are used on human patients as well.

The maggots eat the necrotic tissue but leave the healthy tissue alone. Sometimes they are used in large surgical incisions which get infected where the tissue begins to die. Rather than subject the patient to further painful and dangerous surgery to remove the dead tissues, the maggots are sent to work.

Medical leeches are also used (we order ours from a place in Chicago).

    maggots:

    leeches:

Sometimes the old folk remedies do have something going for them...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you for the information, Anonymous, I feel more comfortable now with what Gifted will have occurring. I hope that the maggots help him recover. Penny in TX, I would agree that "the olden days" is a good name for it.

Nicanor has never raced on the all weather surface, so, your guess is as good as mine on how much he will like it.

Just hope it will favor front runners this friday, no surprise here, I see Nicanor going to the lead and saying catch me if you can!

  79. That is a graded stakes quality field. But glad to see Nicanor dropping in distance (should suit his running style) and without blinkers. Sure hope he does well!

Given how well he runs on turf, the all weather track shouldn't bother him at all. Many turfy type horses do well on the main track at Keeneland.

  86. Bonjour Nicanor,

Good luck in your first race back, Nicanor!

I will be watching on TVG.

Hopefully you will do well and NOT retire this year.

Zenyatta was an older horse when she started racing so
being older does NOT mean that you must be put out to
    pasture so to speak.

Additionally, I don't like "post 1" which is not a great
position but hopefully that will not deter you.

Once again, good luck today in your return to the race track.

Sending my love to you, Nicanor!

  87. Hi!

Love to you, Margano and Lentenor!

  88. That recent race by Nicanor was probably for training purposes only and they weren't really hoping for a win. Just a test to see if his vacation had had the desired effect. Both Nicanor and Lentenor are nominated for a Stakes race on turf on the 28th at Pimlico. Both of them possibly in the same race! Wow! More information to come...
