After his last race, he was given a vacation by the Jackson's for basically a mental break, the first time Nicanor has been allowed to have such a break since he started his career back on Jan. 31st, 2009. Yes, he did have a break for almost eleven months back in 2009-2010 after he sustained a hind injury, but this break had nothing to do with an injury, just some time to be a horse. It was up to Nicanor if he was going to return, by his attitude and more then ten published works, he has shown that he wants to return and is ready for that return. This will be the first race under the guidance of the Delacour's since Nicanor was transferred to their barn. The Delacour's are known to have well conditioned horses in their barn, and have a very good record with their horses after a long break, and with first timers in their care.
What can I say about this field? While the race is listed as a $65,000 Allowance race, it could easily be a stakes race. After such a long break and facing a very talented and tough field, it will be asking a lot for Nicanor to hit the board, even asking more for him to pull off a victory. Most likely, the Delacour's want to get a race under his belt before he returns to Fair Hill. With Nicanor's style of going straight to the lead and the short distance of just seven furlong's, he could pull off the huge upset. I will say this, this year could be the last of Nicanor's career on the track, and it really is up to him and the results he gets in the process. As everyone here, I wish nothing but the best today and in the future for Nicanor. To me, just getting the start today is a victory in itself.

Here is the replay of Nicanor's return yesterday. I am running late for my trek down to Aqueduct to witness what should be a wonderful day of racing, great card! Wishing the best for Bourbonstreetgirl and Teeth of the Dog, hope they BOTH shock the racing world and win at huge odds!
I will say regarding Nicanor's race, it is VERY premature to say Nicanor should be retired after this race. One needs to remember, it was his first race in almost a year, his first race on the all-weather surface, and he was facing a stakes caliber field. While I don't think he would have won, but, I will say this until I am blue in the face, if Nicanor does not get the lead from the start, he is not the same horse. With that said, it was great to see him, and the most important aspects of yesterday's race are, he came out of the race in good order and he got a race under his belt after the long lay-off. Also, look for Lentenor to be entered to race VERY soon :)

As I was thinking....the surface was not right, he didn't look comfortable, and it may just be retirement time for our old guy. That was kind of like his debut, wasn't it? To me, he looked more relaxed than ever in the post parade and while saddling. I always thought he wasn't comfortable with horses on his outside, though.
I'm not giving up on him, i love him.:) but, he is getting on up there, and his last win was in summr '10, in fact his last placing was in '10. he may just be ready to call it quits, most horses are ready to by 6, and by all means, i will miss seeing him run.

That is too bad that Nicanor came in last. He began to "act out" at the gate which is not a good sign overall.
I believe that the Barbaro brothers like the grass to race on so maybe that should be considered for next time.
The TVG hosts did mention Nicanor earlier in the afternoon and also showed the tape of the 2006 Kentucky Derby win by Barbaro and did say that Nicanor has the pedigree but hasn't performed well.

ReplyDeleteNicanor sure was asked to do more than he was capable of after such a long lay off. He changed leads at the top of the stretch several times. Looked like a tired horse to me. Too bad we all can't ride him because we seem to know what would be best for him.(lol) He's still a wonderful horse. Probably needs more conditioning.

I think another race or two and if they get the same results the Jackson's should think about selling him as an event horse, he's got the looks, the height and he may well enjoy it more! All TB's are not cut out for the track, this may well be the right career for him while he's sound. God Speed to Nic and all his entourage.
ReplyDeleteWhatever Nicanor's racing career, I highly doubt the Jacksons would ever sell Nicanor or ANY of the Barbaro family.
ReplyDeleteWith the options the Jacksons have, and the love they have voiced for all of these boys, selling any of them would be a choice that would seem untenable.
My personal feeling, these boys have talent, speed and certainly looks. They have not shown a consistency that is clearly needed for champions. Their story is a complex one, and their roles as catalysts for an audience that continues to care about horse welfare may be part of their purpose.
It is sad that they don't seem to be maximizing their talent, which is clearly not at Barbaro's level. But so many things happened that contributed to herky jerky careers that I fear we may never see their best. I hope we do, especially my heartfelt facorite, Lentenor, who has shown humor, intelligence, elegance, and toughness (4th in the Florida Derby when he was a baby, running to the point of injury: look at the talent who has come in as 4th since . . . ).
But these boys hold sway in our hearts regardless. It is a most unique story that we have been a part of, and continue to be part of.
The sound return of each of them from any endeavor is a gift (look at Hennigan in training and Rotten to the Core in a race, a casualty of another horse's fall).
So we continue to support and be captivated. These are not dismissable TB's that get sold for non-performance. These boys are part of a storied family, coming in first or last.

Very well said, I should think that they will keep each one of the boys, and put them up for stud. They most definitely have the pedigree, and pedigree can be passed on. I feel Lentenor may get a stakes win this season, and I still feel Margano will show the world.

I personally think that Nicanor should have Rosie back. Everytime she's riden him, he's won. I'm so proud of Nicanor and it was so good to see him again. He just keeps getting more gorgeous as time goes back. I agree with Jiminy Cricket, I think Margano is gonna show everybody.

Karen, you are correct in the fact that the Jacksons will not sell these colts. I felt so bad for Nicanor, clearly he was an unhappy horse. Never confortable on the track at any stage of the race including the post parade. I hate to say it, but it may be time to start looking for a regional stud Northview Stallion Station maybe, that might be interested in standing Nicanor for a modest fee. It is not incomprehensible that he would succeed given the fact that there are only a couple Dynaformer sons at stud. It may be that Nicanor has a lot of mares sent his way, just because of Dynaformer and Barbaro in his pedigree. I know for certain the Jacksons would support him with mares of their own. And if that doesn't work out, Nicanor would make a spectacular looking eventer.
ReplyDeleteI was really impressed with Teeth Of The Dog's placing in the Wood. What a talented young horse. Third or fourth start and he runs behind two of the best 3 yr olds in the crop (besides Union Rag's). Way to go Doggie !
My latest Fair Hill update came and the brothers are back in their stalls at Fair Hill safe and sound. The Matz horses where to begin arriving today. I think The Dog probably shipped back after the Wood to await the rest of the Matz stable. Graham Motions bunch is settling in too. As soon as Rag's is in residence, I am going up to see him and tour the facility. I will take many photos, to share with you guys, of as many horses as I can get to (I have a longggggg list). Sally, at Fair Hill is a really fantastic person and has offered to arrange a tour for me. She knows I want to see the Matz & Motion barn as well as the brothers. It's gonna be awesome !!!
Also, When I know the date of my visit to Fair Hill, I will let everyone know. I would be honored if some of you wanted to come join me.

Saw Nic's race and was hurting for him. He LOOKED fabulous, but on the rail and behind the leaders have never been his favorite spots.
ReplyDeleteHe's a proud horse and I worry that the circumstances and reality of this race may have demoralized him a bit. I hope not -- want to see him run again. On grass next time. He is a beautiful boy, as are all of the brothers, and his tail has grown to be as long as Lentenors. (Miss the blunt cut they used to have :( .) No matter how he finishes, I will always love him. I will always love this family of horses.

I was reading about that the other day. Its not surprising that he has been pensioned, although I thought he should've been pensioned sooner, like at the end of this past year. Dynaformer is a great horse and he has certainly earned his pension. Bless his heart, I just hope now that he can have a nice quiet life, and then when the time comes, he cross over peacefully.

AQL, it looks like it wont be until the second weekend in May when Union Rags comes home from Louisville. He shipped straight there instead of coming home to Fair hill before the Derby. That cool though. I think he wins the Derby easily anyway, So I will get to meet a Champion.

What a deep field to bring Nicanor back in- he certainly looked miserable strangled up behind horses at the rail the whole time and then had nothing left! Perhaps he is not mentally in it, but only the team will know if he is ready to make another start on turf perhaps where he can get to the lead.

Yes, Lisa, he will never be bred again. It is too dangerous with whatever heart condition he has. Of the 13 mares already scanned, none are in foal anyways, and the other 7 he has bred this year haven't been scanned yet.

It was announced awhile ago that La Ville would be bred to Bernardini, along with Rachel Alexandra, and Blind Luck, apparently since Zenyatta went to him, all the big name mares and fillies have to. There are several others as well, that I can't remember.

ReplyDeleteThere were signs from last year's breeding season (2011) that Dynaformer would probably be pensioned in the near future. Last spring he only got about half of the mares he covered in foal. (Given his age that was actually pretty good - he is well past the age where many stallions are pensioned).
ReplyDeleteI think that was the main reason a different - younger - stallion was chosen for La Ville this year.
Bernardini has royal bloodlines. He is the son of a Belmont winner (AP Indy) who was the son of one Triple Crown winner (Seattle Slew) and grandson of another (Secretariat). In addition, he comes from very strong bloodlines on his dam's side as well (his damsire was the father of the near Triple Crown winner Real Quiet). He already has one 10 furlong grade I winner (Stay Thirsty) from his first crop among other graded stakes winners, and has a couple of very promising three year old graded stakes winners in Alpha and Algorithms in his second crop.
I do not think anyone could ever accuse the Jacksons of not appreciating Dynaformer - not only did they send their most prized broodmare to him year after year, but they have also bought some promising young Dynaformer filles.
In the end, they made what turned out to be a prudent decision to send their best broodmare to a younger stallion this year rather than risk having another unproductive year for her. While horse breeding is something the Jacksons undertake with love, it is also a business...(just ask the IRS)...
As for Dynaformer himself, he will receive the best care a horse can receive for the remainder of his life. And even with the heart condition which will prevent him from breeding (and given his age and the lack of pregnancies this year, he would have been pensioned anyway) he could very well have some years left. Years to be spent content and happy and peacefully grazing in his pasture and sunning himself.
I don't know who you are nor you me, but thanks so much for reminding everyone about Bernardini's pedigree. He is a young stallion but was already hugely popular before Zenyatta went to him! I adore Zenyatta; however, she has nothing to do with his popularity!! His pedigree says it all! Dynaformer is, and always will be, the MAN! I love his grumpy, ole self! LONG LIVE BIG D! louise C

The brothers worked in company with one another, so the idea of racing together is quite reasonable, I'd say. This weekend, the Henry Clark Stakes at Pimlico -- they've both been nominated (its the 28th). And I agree, Margano is looking very powerful.

Whichever brother runs will be decided by post position and the field running. I don't believe we will ever see both running in the same race down the road, which is a good thing! Whoever the Delacour's decide to run this weekend, well, sure will be exciting.
Bet it will be Lentenor running given Nicanor raced a couple weeks ago. I live a half hour from Pimlico but will be out of town this weekend..That SUCKS..I've never seen either of them race live. Now im pissed !

Oh my goodness...and there is also one with Michael Matz, Barbaro and Union Rag's....If you watch it make sure you have tissues handy. Union Rag's last work at Keeneland was a thing of beauty. You could tell exactly where Peter gave him his head and he just powered up. I am so happy for Michael having another horse going into the Kentucky Derby as one of the favorites.
Margano does look fabulous, very muscular, the time off to grow up obviously agreed with him.

Interesting, Gretchen Jackson is scheduled to testify before the senate subcommitee on racing safety to be held in Kennett Square Pa on April 30th. Gary Stevens, George Strawbridge, Jr and Arthur Hancock III (Claiborne Farm) are also schedlued to testify. I am all for racing safety and tighter restrictions on ALL medications.

My Virtual Stable notification is showing Nicanor first on the AE list for the Clark Stakes at Pimlico and Lentenor is listed as 2nd. Oddly enough Nicanor is 5/1 and Lentenor is 8/1. They have the same rider listed though, so Greg is right, only one will go and it looks like I was right, it will be Lentenor.

I think it's more that Nicanors last race was against tough competition and he was coming from a long layoff. Now that he got a race under his belt and is probably fitter that the last time out, people are expecting to see more from him. While Lentenor is still coming off his layoff and you cannot know how well he'll do.

You can go to equibase, and type in nicanor or Lentenor, look at current entries, and look at entries for the race. It's a full field, with a good but of ae's like nic. There are a few graded stakes winners, and the horse that ran 2nd in lens last race, but most are coming off long lay offs.

I just saw that as well. Lentenor was post 2 so I'm guessing that's why, Nicanor is post 11. I hope things go well for him today.

In a 10 horse field, I think I would prefer the 2, over the far outside, I think it's asking a bit much of Nick, especially since he jsut ran like 2 weeks ago....Seems a bit strange.

Scratch that, he won't be coming from the far outside, he'll be coming from where the 9 usually would, because another horse in the main field scratched, so 2 AE's got in (Nick included).

The audible by the Delacour's to race Nicanor over Lentenor seems more to do with the weather then anything else. The radar shows T-storms rolling in, and my guess the race will be pulled off the turf, we shall see. The race two weeks ago obviously took nothing out of Nicanor or the Delacour's wouldn't be turning him around so soon. Love that blinkers are back on Nicanor and blog post to follow looking at the existing field, Godspeed Nicanor and Luis...
