The Debut of Margano

Margano, Barbaro's two year old brother, will be making his debut tomorrow at Belmont Park.  His first race will be on the turf going 1 1/16 miles, a surface that his older brothers have had great success on, with Barbaro winning his debut race going a mile on the turf at Delaware Park, Nicanor winning his turf debut by over 15 lengths at Delaware Park, and Lentenor winning second time running on the turf at Gulfstream Park.

Am I a little surprised that Margano's debut will be at this distance?  Quite frankly, yes, but, here is a quote by Robin Smullen (assistant trainer to Mr. Barclay Tagg, Margano's trainer) that explains their thinking on why to race Margano tomorrow at 1 1/16 miles, "He’s physically ready to run, he’s had a lot of works, he’s mentally not quite ready, but you have to start somewhere, we were considering the six-furlong turf race next week, but Barclay and I talked about it and we felt that might run him off his feet.  He’s bred to go long, and I just think maybe he can settle a little bit and try to make a run and see where we are and hopefully we’ll get him to where he’s mentally ready." (courtesy of DRF.com)

So, after fourteen impressive work-outs at Belmont Park and Saratoga, including four gate works, one turf work at Saratoga, and a blow-out this morning at Belmont Park (Margano went three furlongs in 36:71), Margano is as ready as he will ever be for his debut.  Tomorrow cannot arrive quick enough for myself, and I am sure, for all the Fans of Barbaro and his brothers.  While I am extremely nervous as the race nears, I have complete confidence that Mr. Barclay Tagg and his team have Margano physically ready to go.  One must remember, a win isn't necessarily of the utmost importance tomorrow.  Margano will be learning so much in a matter of just a few minutes as post time approaches.  From the walk to the paddock (where he is quite familiar, since Belmont Park is his home), to the post parade, the crowd noise, the large field loading into the gate, and the experience of traveling over a mile on the Belmont turf.  A lot to take in for a two year old colt, I would say.  With that said, based on his works and bloodlines, a win would not shock me at all, just not expecting it.

For the first time in a race involving one of Barbaro's brothers, I decided not to look at the field in the race at all.  I decided that I am going to enjoy the race with no preconceived notions regarding the other colts, I will say, this was not easy for me to do!  I did notice that the pedigrees of the colts running are second to none, and the connections involved (breeders, owners, trainers) are all top notch in their respective fields.

Seeing Margano up close and personal for the first time is something that I have waited for, and, I cannot believe this day has finally arrived.  The race tomorrow will be the seventeenth time I have seen Barbaro and/or one of his brothers race in person, but, this will be my first seeing a debut by one of them, which I believe adds to my extra, nervous excitement!  Most importantly, I just want all to run a safe race, and for each colt to gain that experience that is so vital for two year olds.

Here is the field for tomorrows race, the last race of the day, race #10, post time is about 5:50, which will be the race following a Winter Memories victory in the Garden City Stakes (Grade I) !!!

  1. With his 3 furlong in 36.71 this morning, he's fine-tuned and really ready for tomorrow's race!
I am very excited to see this magnificent colt race.
Have fun all of you traveling to Belmont tomorrow (a contingent of about 9, perhaps 10 persons).
    WIsh I could go, too!

  4. Greg, take lots and lots of pictures. There has been so few of Margano. I am sure he is gorgeous, I just don't have a reference point. You are so lucky you live so close to New York City and can see him race in person.

  5. The excitement. The anticipation. The nerves!
I'm sad, however, that I may have to miss his debut. :( But I'll check results as soon as I can.

    Run well, Margano!
Looking forward to more pictures of him!

  6. The fact that Tagg (a born horseman) is willing to let Margano start for the first time at this distance, at this premiere track, and against a large group of colts whose pedigrees and human connections all scream future graded stakes runners indicates to me that he has a lot of confidence in the colt's potential.

I am not expecting a win - anything and everything can happen in a maiden race for two year olds! - but as long as Margano has a safe trip and has a good learning experience in a race with a field so large, all will be well.

Yes - please take a lot of pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And thank you for all of the time and caring you put into this blog!

  7. Greg, Thanks in advance for all the wonderful photos I know your going to take of Margano today. I can't wait to see them. Unlike you I had to look at the Pedigree's. It's a who's who of blue blooded race horses. If Margano finishes well or even beats this bunch (and I think he can), I'd say it was a pretty good indication of his talent and ability. As for the distance, I think I would be more concerned if he was going short since everyone knows Dynaformers are bred for distance. Good luck and safe racing to Margano and all the other maidens. I'd also like to say good luck to Hard not to Like in her stakes race at Woodbine today and Shared Account in the Canadian, also at Woodbine. Additionally, in Margano's race, Mike Matz has Political Courage running and Pletcher has Our Entourage who is owned by Mike Repole and out of a Dynaformer mare. It should be an interesting race, the only drawback is that it is so late in the day, we probably wont be able to see Greg's pictures until tomorrow. Thanks again Greg !

  8. This is a stellar field albeit partly of babies who have never raced, most of the horses in the race have raced before. Margano is going to learn a lot from this experience and his future looks exciting.
Praying for a safe race for him and the rest of the field and a great time for all the gang going down to watch him. Via Con Dios for all -- horse and human.

  9. Minestone, Deo Goes Rocky and all of the AE horses have been scratched from Margano's race.

  10. The big day is here!!! TVG just showed Barbaro's Derby win and was talking about Margano. Said this was a good race to watch because of the quality of horses entered. They even pronounced his name right. That's a good omen.

Race well Margano but most importantly come home safe and sound. There will be other races for you my boy. You have a huge fan base rooting for you and loving you soo much.

Greg...as has been said before, lots and lots of pictures of this beautiful guy. You FOB's have a great time and blow kisses for me to.

  14. This was a very tough field, and I think he was the least experienced colt in the race?

There is a write up of the field here:
    http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/maidenwatch/archive/2011/09/16/turf-and-tapeta-on-tap.aspx

As long as he came back sound and healthy, and got some learning time, he should do better next time out. :-)

  15. I agree. Looks like he finally got it towards the end of the race. Glad he got this race under his belt and come back healthy.

  17. Arem..he came in 7th out of 10. Should be able to find a replay somewhere.

This was his first race and you have to remember that BT and Robin said he was not yet there mentally. Dynaformer's mature slowly. You saw that with Nic and Len. He did really well for his first time out. This was a good learning race for him. And the most important thing is he came home safe.

Margano we love you big boy.

Can't wait to see Greg's pictures of him and Winter Memories. He'll have the full story for us soon.

  18. I am so jealous of Greg right now lol. He got to see arguably the most amazing race of the year with 'Memories winning coming from dead last in the final 16th, then he got to see Margano's debut! I've only been to the track once, like 7-9 years ago at Los Alomitos, I was so young all I remember is getting to pet a lead pony, and my brother actually winning on a horse lol! I'm stuck to watching on tv. Equibase says Margano only lost by 4 1/2. Oh, and Jimmy gets a cast change and x-ray this week, I'll let y'all know how he's doing, he's at the barn we board at right now, not at the vet's, and he's getting some paddock time. He loves posing for the camer, not joking, he's a hound lol ;).

Would have liked for him to have finshed better, but even Secretariat did not win his debut.

All of the brothers are something special, IMO. And I shall wait and watch until they prove me right.

    the race.

Margano did look like he was starting to "get it" by the end of the race. Two year olds are still just kids. You get precocious ones from time to time who seem to take to the track from the get go, but most of them need at least a couple of starts before they begin to figure things out.

To give you an idea of the quality of this field, the winner is by Street Cry, the stallion who also sired Zenyatta, and his dam is a grade I winner on the grass and was sired by Dynaformer and who also has a lot of black type (stakes winners) on her mother's side. And he had a previous race before this one.

Margano looked like he belonged with this high class group, and I think with some experience and maturity he will do very well.

And the distance for his first start certainly did not look to be a problem.

  24. Bonjour Margano,

I just watched the replay on bloodhorse.com, and
it looks like you came in 7th in your first race today.

Keep working hard and you will make it eventually.

Since it was reported that you were not mentally ready yet, it may not have been the right time to race you.

    Who knows.

While I was gone all day, I kept mentioning
your name to my friends off and on all day long wondering if you had a good race.

Good luck, Margano, on your next race.

I am eager to see you race once again, and I
am also eager to see some photos/videos of you.

    Lots of love to you.

I kept watching the replay of Margano's first race, and it looks like Margano was understanding at the end of the race what he
needed to do. He was dead last for a short while but inched up to come in 7th.

Not a bad race afterall for Margano.

You are catching on, Margano. Keep up the good
    work.

Lots of love to you, Margano.

  27. Well, at least if Margano was not meant to win today at least there's still a Dynaformer connection so its still sort of in the family. Did you see how our boy came by those three horses he beat? Also was it just me or did it look to anyone else like he was being held rather tightly for a bit. If so at least he didn't seem to fight it so much like Nicanor still does. Just for fun I hope that when he runs again Kendrick Carmouche can ride him. Let's just hope he gets to run at least one more time this season.

    ReplyDelete
  28. To Lou in Texas the replay is still there. Just tap videos on right hand side at top of page, scroll down to race replays in the middle drop down menu that should give you a list of races. If not look to the left there's a small button which reads apply click that and it will say loading races Race 10 should come up. Hope that helps. FYI the last horse that Margano passed was Michael Matz' horse (Political Courage) and the very last horse was the one that tried to pull a Nicanor and go wire to wire but unfortunately ended up going backward. Also, if Margano had been up a little closer, there were several horses that wanted to run there also and he could very well have gotten badly bumped, bruised or just plain hurt. PHEW! I think all things considered he ran a very fine race for his first try.

  29. Thanks for another update and all the comments on Margano's race. I was able to watch it on tvg and it did look to me like a huge learning experience for him. He was behind a wall of horses and almost looked like he had to check at one part in the early going, but he sure did try any way. Hopefully he has come out of the race well and will learn from this and move forward! I'll be looking forward to all your photos, Greg. Thank you so much for this blog!

  31. Fabulous photos of the extremely beautiful Margano over on his thread on ABR -- thank you Elaine. He is the most beautiful horse, with the most gorgeous face and eyes. I'm hopelessly in love now.

I felt just instinctively that he is a distance horse. He's a big boy and he took a while to "get his groove on". But when he began to run he needed more distance and he'd have finished closer to the front. It will be interesting to see where they put him next. He'll break his maiden soon...and he IS the Magnificent Margano.

Barbaro's, Nicanor's, and Margano's stars are all the same shape with Barbaro's and Margano's being the most similar.

Margano looks so much like Barbaro.... Definetly no mistaking them as brothers.

  35. Isn't he gorgeous? Hard to believe that he suffered broken ribs when being foaled and a serious infection of his umbilical cord shortly
afterwards. He recovered and began to grow into the most beautiful colt ever -- a dead ringer for Barbaro except dark like his sire. Our Babynor is
    just magnificent.

Babynor II, in the meantime, ought to be a weanling right about now, right? Wish we could see photos of him...

I imagine the Jackson's will keep him private just like they did Margano. We will definitely be lucky if we see more recent pictures of him or LVR. I think after all the public interests about Barbaro, they want to be private again. Not so good for us FOB"s because we love the brothers just like we love Barbaro. But that's their choice.

  39. Margano didn't look happy at the back of the pack. I think he didnt know what to do most of the way around. He really didn't get beat too badly. Although he finished seventh, he was only 4.5 lengths back. It may be this brother prefers the dirt. I expect he learned a great deal on Saturday and will perform much better next time out. Thanks to Elaine for the photos of Margano. His star does indeed resemble Barbaro's, more so then the other brothers, but he is much darker, like Dynaformer. No denying he is a beautiful colt. Looking forward to seeing him improve off this race. Also, It looks to me like another furlong would benefit what im guessing is a come from off the pace running style.

  40. Marigold...no problem. I just like to know who I'm visiting with so to speak.

I think Margano learned a lot from this race. He will understand what all those horses are doing out there running with him. Not just playing anymore. He is a dead ringer for Barbaro except him being darker. Elanine's pictures were great! So good to see what our Margano looks like now. It's been soo long since we had seen him. Now with Babynor2 we'll have the same thing of not getting to see him grow. I know the Jackson's want their privacy but the FOB's are a special group and so devoted to the brothers you would think they would know we are definitely going to be interested in ALL of Barbaro's brothers. We're not going away. Sorry for the rant but it's upsetting not to be able to follow all the brothers like we have with Nic and Lenny.

Hope everyone has a great week.

  41. It was beautiful weather out in NY for Margano, unfortunately I did not have the time to travel to Belmont. But I had much of the same impression as everyone from the replays, he really hit a new gear when he changed to the correct lead in the stretch, made up a good bit of ground to be 4 1/2 lengths back. Not sure how the turf was that day, but to me it didn't look like he was all that comfortable over this ground. Looking forward to him racing on dirt, hopefully in his next start. That far back, when the rest of the field had sorta taken off in front of him, he was probably distracted and not sure what was going on. He realized what he was supposed to do near the end. Seeing him hit his best stride in the stretch, it will be exciting to find out how good he is when he puts everything together.

Thank you so much, Elaine, for the photos! I have been eagerly awaiting new photos of how he matured into a horse! Photo 010, he is a dead ringer for Barbaro. Love the dark bay coloring like his dad, but with the star especially, he has the most resemblance to Barbaro, with a little Lentenor. His nose is just too cute, I know we are all biased but they truely are a beautiful family line! And I can't believe I had missed all news about Babynor, of a when and a what! Another brother! Cannot wait to see what he looks like... maybe if we all ask the photographer/blogger on Bloodhorse who goes photographs all the mares and their foals, she will go get some pictures for us. ;) Hope the old man doesn't retire just yet- we get a sister next!!

  42. Thanks for sharing the link to Elaine's photos on Flikr - they were all great. When she was able to capture him in the frame without any other horses, we could easily imagine he was at the front of the pack - moving very strongly. :) He is definitely a beautiful boy and I'm looking forward to his next race when he will know more about how this business all works. Thank you!!

  43. It's fun to watch these babies try to figure it all out, but when they do!! This one is so breathtakingly beautiful that we will all be so very thrilled when he "get's it" and begins to win.
He was under tight restraint in the first part of the race, but when Jose let him out, he went for it!
His action is a lot like Barbaro's and he sure looks like a darker version of him. Who knows what he'll be able to do??? Can hardly wait to see!!

  44. Hi!

The reason that I use "anonymous" is because that is the only way that I can post on this
blog but I do place my name at the bottom.

Perhaps that is what most people are doing in
order to post on this blog.

No one is speaking about the Jockey who rode
    Margano.

After seeing the replay several times, I am now wondering if he didn't "move" Margano soon enough. He did a good job of "removing" Margano
from the pack to the outside which definitely helped Margano understand what he needed to do.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thank you!

  56. Lisa in Maine....It is going around that LVR is in foal again with a colt. I haven't seen anyone from the Jackson camp announcing this but everybody seems to believe it's true. Even Greg. Have no idea where this news came from so draw your own conclusions. I'm not saying it's true or not true.

Check out the article above. It says very nice things about Margano and also mentions Nic and Lenny..

  57. I am very sad to learn of the passing of Rahy, may he rest in peace. The most disturbing fact about his death is he was the same age as Dynaformer. I honestly think 2012 will be Dynaformers last year at stud. He will be 27 in a couple of months and he cant keep it up forever (no pun intended) If La Ville Rouge is in fact in foal with another colt, The Jacksons may never get their filly out of this cross.

Lovely article about Margano, He will run again in a few weeks and I think he will do much better. If it was me, I would give him 1 1/4 miles in his next race. I think he will love the added distance.

  58. I too was sad to hear of Rahy's passing. I was lucky enough to spend several days in Lexington over the first few days of the Keenland sale and took a tour of Three Chimmneys (of course to see Dynaformer) I did get to see Rahy. I felt he moved, looked and acted alot older than Dynaformer. Hopefully Dynaformer will have many more years ahead. RIP Rahy.

  59. Margano and Lentenor are a lot alike physically, both big, beautiful boys, with a single star (though Margano's is nearly identical to Barbaro's).

Lentenor should be racing soon, Greg has hinted at that but won't reveal anymore information so don't even try to get it out of him!

I miss Nicanor and hope he'll be back soon...

  60. I miss Nicanor too. But if he needs the rest/relaxation from racing than hopefully he will come back on the scene with gusto. I love all the brothers, but Nicanor has a special place in my heart. He probably is the least like Barbaro in physical characteristics and most likely the "attitude" department. But he is Nicanor, the first brother and a champion in my book even it he never races again. I loved being able to see Lentenor in August and Margano in September. Can't wait for the next race which ever brother is racing. It's fun knowing we fans have much to look forward to.

  61. FYI...one of our FOBs, Cheryl Jones, has passed unexpectedly. We are asking all FOB's to turn on your porch or barn light this evening from 7:00 - 10:00p.m. in her memory. She was an animal advocate in every way. God rest her soul.

  72. Such sad news about Fleet Indian. What a horrible race it was for her and poor Pine Island. I wish colic wasn't fatal so often. Below is an article with Barbara Livingston's photo tribute to Fleet Indian- what a beautiful bay. I didn't know she was so huge! There is also a nice link at the bottom to Secretariat's son, D'Accord, who has unfortunately passed as well, at the age of 32.

  76. I hope everyone else will be watching the Michael Matz's trainee Union Rag's in the Champagne on Saturday. If he wins, you will all be able to hear be screaming from Maryland. haha Such a big beautiful boy. If this colt stays healthy, he is going to be exceptional. He is 16.3 already (about Barbaro's size at that age)and they haven't had to stop on him at all, also like Barbaro. Michael made a comment that I took as a reference to Barbaro when talking to the press about Union Rags. He said "this colt has a long way to go before I can say he is the best I've ever had, but I hope he get's there". I haven't been this high on a 2 yr old since Hard Spun in 2007, and before him Barbaro in 2006. Too bad Margano isn't running, but we get to see Lentenor on Sunday. Good Luck too all and safe racing.

P.S. I too was stunned by the news of Fleet Indian's passing. She was such a nice mare. Colic and Laminitis are both terrible things for a horse. May she rest in peace.

  79. Sorry to here about the passing of Cheryl Jones, may she rest in peace. Nicanor will always be special to me, even if he never races again. He gave us his wonderful spirit after the passing of Barbaro. I so hope Lenny proves Greg wrong. The one thing about horse racing you just don't know what horse will be having great day or just one of those days. Good luck Lentenor, most of all stay safe!

  83. Wooooo Hooooo, Congrats to Micheal Matz and the connections on Union Rag's spectatular win in the Champagne. He really kicked it into gear once he got clear. That my fiends is the mark of a special horse showing he has a brain as well as ability. Aweome win. I was very happy to see him dominate Alpha like he did. Alpha (by Bernardini) was in my opinion the biggest threat to Rag's. Turns out it was really no contest. On the the Breeders Cup Juvenile. I hope he loves Churchill Downs. Oh and by the way, Union Rags already has enough winnings to make it to the gate for the 2012 Kentucky Derby, only a couple grand shy of half a million. Could you all hear me cheering him on...LOL
