Margano Joins New Trainer

Being Preakness Week, which will bring up bad memories for racing fans, and especially for the FOB's, I figured this news would help ease the pain a little.

The news is in regards to Barbaro's little brother, Margano.

It looks like Roy and Gretchen Jackson have made the decision to have Margano join the barn of Mr. Barclay Tagg, who is home based at Belmont Park in Elmont New York.

Margano, a two year old colt sired by Dynaformer and produced from La Ville Rouge on March 10, 2009 at Mill Ridge Farm, is the full brother to Barbaro, Nicanor, and Lentenor.  Also, Mill Ridge Farm reported today that La Ville Rouge is still very pregnant and due any day now!

Margano recently made the trek up north from Ocala, Florida.  Just like his brothers before him, Margano started his training at Stephens Thoroughbreds down in Florida.

I feel for Mr. Matz and his staff, being that this is the first brother that won't be under their guidance, but in the long run, it might benefit all those involved.  I just hope Margano gets the care and love that Barbaro, Nicanor, and Lentenor recieved from all in Mr. Matz's barn, they are a class act!

The Jacksons (Lael Stable) have had numerous horses under the guidance of Mr. Tagg in the past and presently have quite a few in Mr. Tagg's barn.

I would have to say, one of the more prominent horses the Jackson's trusted with Mr. Tagg was one of my favorites, the Champion Showing Up.  Showing Up was a multiple Graded Stakes Winner, winner of the 2006 Grade II Coolmore Lexington Stakes, 2006 Grade I Secretariat Stakes, 2006 Grade II Jamaica Breeders' Cup Handicap, and the 2006 Grade I Hollywood Derby.

Showing Up also placed sixth in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, a race that Margano's big brother Barbaro won.  In Showing Up's last race, the Grade 2 Maker's Mark Mile on April 13th 2007, he placed second behind another true Champion, Kip Deville.  Showing Up finished his brief, but brilliant career, with a record of 10 Starts, 7 Wins, 1 Second, and 1 Third, with career earning's of $1,660,500.

I completely trust the judgement and faith that Roy and Gretchen Jackson have entrusted with Mr. Tagg and his staff.  This could not have been a easy decision for them to make, but, if they think it is in the best interest of Margano, then that is good enough for me!

It will be exciting to see Margano begin his journey on the track as he matures into a racehorse.

Wishing nothing but the best for Margano, now and in the future.

  2. Daffodil--I guess I'm too sentimental, but I'm with you :( Doesn't mean I don't adore Margano and I will still hang on any little thing we learn about him, but the news struck me a little tough too. He is incredibly gorgeous and so so balanced in his body--I thought that a long time ago too--he looks so balanced on the track--focused and with a nice dropped head and shoulder--without hanging like the middle horse. Good Luck Margano!!

  3. Margano looks so much like his Daddy...complete with a full nose chain.

I am just so happy we now have photos of him. You will notice that Margano is in the lead.

I wish nothing but the best for all of the brothers. Good luck and may all of you win big.

  4. Barclay Tagg is a great trainer,so is Michael Matz. The youngest Barbaro brother is in good hands as was/are his brothers. Margano looks awesome.

  5. Margano looks gorgeous! I haven't seen many up-to-date pictures for a while. He is quite the looker, like his brothers!

Here is some BIG news, just in case people haven't heard!:
La Ville Rouge had a colt this morning. It's said to be a "good size." Both mom and foal are said to be doing well. I was hoping for a filly finally, but any new member of the Barbaro family is welcome! Yay for the new colt!

  6. Margano is VERY handsome - I do think he looks more like his Daddy!

  7. Thank you for sharing the news on Margano! He has grown into a very beautiful colt and I wish him the very best. I know he will be in very good hands with Barclay Tagg, a trainer the Jacksons have used for many of their horses. Congratulations go to them also on the birth of the new colt. Wonder what his name will be?

  8. Glad to hear news on this beautiful boy!! Please update as often as you can!!! Can't wait for the new baby! Thanks(:

Barclay Tagg is a wonderful trainer, sweet and gentle man, very friendly.

  11. He IS a powerful looking youngster. Hope he far3es well in New York. Still sad that he's not with his brothers at the idyllic Fair Hill with that wonderful, loving staff of Michael Matz's.

  12. Well, I think us FOB's are really disappointed that Margano isn't with his brothers, but he doesn't know that. We have been so close to the brothers and with MM's barn that it's a hard pill to swallow that he won't be with them. MM's barn has been so nice to all of us and letting someone from his barn share with us the brother's personalities and likes and dislikes. We have been spoiled with all the wonderful news we have received about them. It's going to be hard not to be a part of Margano's life. We will love him none the less. Just put him in your Virtual Stable and maybe we can see when he works and when he begins to race. We can still support him on the track. What else can we do???

Thanks Greg for the wonderful pictures and the article you wrote about Margano. We know you will keep us as informed as you can.

  13. Wow what a news day!

Margano is Dynaformer part deux - color, body type, demeanor? I am not sad about him going to Mr. Tagg - a good man and good trainer who has done well for Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, as has Mr. Matz. Maybe they are spreading the wealth a bit, so to speak. I expect big things from this colt - maybe the best of the three?

And finally cigars instead of pacing the waiting room! Blessings to LVR and Babynor! Hot dog! Can't wait for those first turn-out photos!

Now to the Heart web site for Judy's latest news.

  14. I'm not quite sure what to think or feel about this....
I keep seeing "dump the trainer" type comments when Nicanor doesn't win, and it will get worse if Margano starts to win with this other trainer....
I want to wish Margano success, but I'm not looking forward to the comments his success might bring.
I hate for any of the brothers to be compaired to one another as inevitable happens. They are all very special to me in their own ways. (Though I must admit, I have an extra big place in my heart for Nicky right next to big brother Barbaro... :P)
And now there is an opening for compairisons between trainers....

Time will tell how this turns out, I suppose.

On a lighter note, PICTURES!!!!! I love seeing these newer pictures of Margano, especially the one of him in training.

  15. The photo of Margano in company above shows him to be focused and determined. The other two horses, less so. The other photos show him to be big and well developed. Out "little bird" says he is very sweet and much easier to train than his brothers.
This may just be The One! How is hurts that he won't be in Michael's barn with his brothers, safe and much loved.

    Daffodil

  16. Yes, We may see a Derby contender next year, Tagg will have him on track. As far as MM goes, he had and has his shot with Nic and Lentenor and we haven't seen much luck. One horse may do well under a trainer and another may not,. I am glad to see Margano go to Tagg, who is a very good trainer and is based at Belmont "in the center of all the Stakes Co." and from what Steven's may have relayed to the Jackson's, they opted to go this route. Good Luck and congrats to Mom and the new foal!

  17. I knew it, Margano looks remarkably like the old man of Three Chimneys. Wow, He is stunning. Im not surprised he went to Barkley Tagg. Michael is not having much success with Nicanor and Lentenor. Not that it's his fault. He looks awesome on the track. I need to add him to my Virtual Stable.

    WOOOHOOO a new colt...Sereno/Serano yes ?

  18. Margano is stunning. Can't wait to see more pictures.

Speaking of pictures, Kimberly at Millridge said they would be posting pictures of Babynor2 soon. She said he weighed 138 lbs and he is a bay. How does this ones weight compare to the other brothers?

  19. Sad to see the comments from people putting down Michael Matz. Wow, how little they remember.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous, your comment is one of the reasons this saddens me so. Michael will take some heat for this decision, whether rightfully or not. He doesn't deserve that heat. He has worked so hard with Nic and Len and brought out the great talent in Barbaro. He suffered the loss of Barbaro as intensely as the rest of us. It is sad that Margano won't be in the wonderful barn of MM with his big brothers. Barclay tagg, take good care of that boy -- we'll be watching!

    Daffodil

    ReplyDelete
  21. No one is putting down MM, most of the people here have a love story with the brothers and that is ok, but remember they are race horses not pets {as of yet} they have a job to do and it's the trainers job to get it done. If not then you need to find a trainer that fits the horse, they all have different styles of training. Barbaro was just too good so he would have made any trainer look good.....

    ReplyDelete
  22. Personally, I would never put Michael Matz down. This guy is a first class horseman and national hero for saving those kids in that plane crash. I do not think his training has anything to do with Nicanor or Lentenors proformance's, or lack there of. They just are not Barbaro. Does that make us love them less? Hell no ! However, Anyone being honest with themselves realizes Barbaro was a special horse and as the brothers of such a talented racehorse expectations of them were set very high, maybe too high. I've found out from experience, that if you do not have expectations you can't be dissapointed. We can "if" forever about Barbaro. But, there is no doubt in my mind he would have won the Triple Crown. I sympathize with the Matz barn for not getting Margano, but Barkley Tagg is no slouch in the training department. The thing that is dissapointing to me is that I feel Margano will run circles around Nicky and Lenny and Michael will miss out on that.

Margana looks gorgeous. Thank you for sharing the photos of him. Hope more coming.

Congratulations to La Ville Rouge on the recent birth of her new baby boy!

Sometimes a change is forthcoming with Margano going to a new trainer. Let's see what happens.

    Good luck, Margano!

Lots of love to you and your brothers.

  25. Anyone who thinks this decision is a reflection on Michael Matz is just plain wrong IMO. Both Matz and Tagg are excellent trainers. The Jacksons have just chosen a different path for Margano. I wish him nothing but the best as he starts his racing career with the Tagg barn. Just as I wish Nicanor and Lentenor success as their careers continue under the excellent care of the Matz team.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I believe Margano will do just fine with Tagg. My hurt falls in the direction that we FOB's will not have a connection with him like we do the brothers. We won't have the opportunity to be close to him like we are to Nicanor and Lentenor. Maybe that's what the Jackson's want for him, to have a more private life than the brothers. I don't think they realize how close we feel to all the brothers of Barbaro including Babynor2. They just seem to be keeping them out of the public eye more and more. But, there is nothing we can do about that. Guess we'll just have to love these last two brothers from afar.

  27. Lou, exactly what I've been feeling -- it removes him from us. Well, we'll just have to find a way to overcome that -- so into the Virtual Stable he goes!

Poor Margano. Wish he could be enjoying the beautiful Fair Hill with all the trails and beautiful scenery. Especially since it's so quiet there and away from the track. Think of him everyday as I do all the brothers. We may not hear about his works if Tagg doesn't let them be known. Have him in my stable but that doesn't mean I'll get any notices until he races.

  41. Lou, I so hope that you are mistaken and that we WILL hear about Margano's works as well as when he races . I thought all official works had to be posted and registered. Am I wrong? We've all looked so forward to this colts' arrival and training and racing -- it is so hard to be cut off from him, and so very sad. The Jacksons have their reasons, and he is their horse, not ours. But we are his fans and we'll love him, too. Just hope that he won't be completely shrouded in secrecy. And that we'll be able to hear about and see him. Only time will tell...

  42. Morning everyone, The suspense over Margano was killing me so I sent an email to the Tagg barn asking about Margano and received an almost immediate reply from Robin Smullen. She says Margano is more short coupled then Barbaro, Nicanor and Lentenor and stands about 16 hands. They are almost done "2 minute licking" him and he should start breezing next week barring any set backs. DAFFODIL, this is why we've seen no published works.

She also stated that he is lovely to be around so im assuming that means he only inherited his sires looks and not his temperment. (I recently heard from someone who works at 3 Chimneys, that his groom carry's a club, especially in the breeding shed) They will post more pics of him on the Tagg stable website as soon as they get them.

Have a great day and safe racing !

    Criminal Type

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks Criminal Type.

I think the difference between the brothers and their sire might simply be that they had a wonderful mother and they were handled more by people as foals.

As I recall Margano spent more time with LVR because of his medical problems as a foal.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kathy, You may be right about the temperment coming from LVR.

Nice article in BH this morning by Steve Haskin on Brilliant Speed, the Dynaformer colt racing in the Belmont on Saturday. There are like 12 Belmont winners, sires of Belmont winners and dam's of Belmont winners in his extended pedigree. He certainly wont have any issues getting the distance. Im wondering how he will stack up against Animal Kingdom, Mucho Macho Man and Master of hounds on Saturday. In my opinion those are the only 4 horses in the race who will be effective at 1.5 miles.

  45. Criminal Type...thanks a million for checking up on Margano. I just wish we could have more updates as to his likes and dislikes. The brothers in MM's barn are easier to get reports on.

Got a message from our little bird that La Rumba was checked out by the vets and found nothing wrong and sent her back to her home. Sure hope that is good news and something doesn't appear later. At least we can breath a little easier for now.

Will be checking for pictures of Margano. How exciting it this!

    Lou in TX

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ugg, Lou..I was watching La Rumba's race, I work from home so the tv is always on HRTV or TVG. I heard the race call and looked up from the computer but didn't see what happened. Did She fall, or just take a bad step ? The commentator said something went amiss and the jockey was unseated, then they would pass on any information about her, but I heard nothing. Hopefully she is ok and we won't hear anything bad over the next few days. I always worry when they go back to the barn after an "incident".

Especially if it's a head injury. Exogenous immediatly comes to mind. This gorgeous gray daughter of Unbridled flipped over leaving the paddock at Belmont on Breeders Cup weekend 2001 and sadily had to be euthanized a few days later because she had fractured her skull. Very Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Criminal Type,

Thanks so much for the info regarding Margano, very interesting!

Regarding the Belmont Stakes, I think they are all running for second, it is Animal Kingdom's to lose. I don't think Mucho Macho Man should be running, and I am worried he will be burnt out for the rest of the year. I like Animal Kingdom, Nehro, and Brilliant Speed to finish in the top three, should be a very exciting race.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Greg...glad to see you post again. Hope things are better on the home front. Isn't it good news about Margano? Hopefully there will be pictures soon. Sounds like they are going to race him as a 2yr old. Really wish they would wait until he is three so his bones would be more developed, especially his leg and ankle bones.

Dearnhardtrlz3...I didn't see the race but was just reporting on the info that she didn't finish the race and was vanned off. All the info I got is what I reported. Do hope she's ok though. Maybe we'll get more news later on.

  49. Criminal Type -- that was the BEST news (Greg posted it on ABR and it is getting a great reaction). So good to hear about Margano -- he's going to be so exciting. Can't reconcile Robin SMullen's description about his short coupling with our little bird's report that he was longer coupled than his brothers. Hmmm. And he may be breeaing soon?? Maybe we won't be as shut out as we've feared...

    ReplyDelete
  50. IMHO...I think we should leave it up to Greg to talk to someone at the Tagg barn. We FOB's live for information on all the brothers but since he's (Margano) not in MM's barn we probably won't get much inside info. Doubt if Taggs barn has ever dealt with any horse that has such a following as the Jackson brothers. He doesn't feel obligated in anyway to share such information with us. Matz has dealt with us because of Barbaro so he understands how we feel about the brothers. Margano is in a completely different situation. It's going to be hard not to have that inside info on him but I guess we'll just have to live with the fact that's just not going to happen. Makes me sick to my stomach!
Just hope the Jackson's will let Mill Ridge give us updates for Babynor 2 as time goes along. He may be another brother we can't keep tabs on. I'm sure the Jackson's have their reasons but the FOB's are a very loving bunch and I thnk the Jackson's should feel really good about all the work we do in Barbaro's memory and understand how hard it is for us not to be informed in these horses progress in training and their races. We love them all. Don't get me wrong, I love the Jackson's and think there are no greater owners in the world. We know with them the horse definitely comes first!

Let me say this before I get jumped on..I completely understand that the Jackson's owe us nothing and have every right to their privacy. I am definitely not trying to suggest otherwise. They are such good people.

  51. Lou, I agree with your evaluation of the Jacksons. I am a big admirer of theirs. It is so hard to not have the same connection with Margano as we've had with Nic and Lentenor -- we love ALL the brothers. And we love them fiercely. LVR can keep having them and we'll say bring them on! We'll love the next one just as much.

I'm not surprised if they run Margano at 2. He's probably further along than Nic or Len were at the same age. I think he's going to be more like Barbaro than the other brothers. BUT, my love for Nic and Len will not diminish one iota! It will just expand to include Margano and the little newest one.

    ReplyDelete
  52. FYI,

Lentenor worked, going four furlongs in :48.60 seconds at Fair Hill and not Belmont Park ;)

  53. Lou, Robin said she would post more pictures of Margano on their website as soon as they are available. You should check it out. Lot's of info about the horses in their barn. I didn't get any indication from Robin that I was bothering them, In fact I think she was pleased that fans are interested in their horses. Apparently Greg was also pleased with the information. I also have a contact inside IEAH who is providing me with information on the Hard Spun colt who is a half to Lost In The Fog.

  55. Deanhardtrlz3....I'll be thankful for any information we get on Margano or any of the brothers. But, I bet Robin has no clue how many FOB's are following Margano. Since she is an assistant trainer, I imagine she stays pretty busy. A call now and then would be ok but we shouldn't all start calling. They would have to set up a separate phone line just for Margano. LOL! That's an idea, have a special phone # to call for a recorded message on how Margano is doing. They could up date it however often they had time to. Wouldn't that be neat!!! Do appreciate you helping getting the info out there. I wasn't suggesting that your call was inappropiate, sorry if you took it that way. Would love any info that you can provide.

  56. Lou, LOL, no worries. I didn't call the Tagg barn, I would never be so bold as to do that. Im sure they are very busy and I would not want to disrupt their routine in any way. I sent an email that way if if they felt like answering me they could and if not, oh well. I consider myself lucky that they answered me at all. After all, I am noone to them. Im also sure your right that they have not grasped the FOB phenomenon yet. Margano worked from the gate at Belmont Park this morning, I already posted this on the main page so if your thinking "I already read this" your right...He went four furlongs over the main track in 50.54 and was 18th of 19 at that distance. Not terrible time at all, but I am guessing the work was more about getting his gate card then speed. It is very exciting because gate card means he is approaching his first start. It's going to be one of those who's who MSW's at Saratoga...AWESOME !

  64. Hi All....he's had 2 gate works so maybe he has his gate card now. You know what that means!!!!! Can't believe our baby Margano is about to start racing. Seems like only yesterday that he was playing in the pasture with his gal pal. Hope he is ready and his bones are strong. Know Dynaformers grow and mature slowly. Maybe he's more like Barbaro than the rest. I said "more like" not like Barbaro. There will never be another Barbaro in my book! Good luck to him when he does start to race and may your big brother be with you on the track. He can teach you well just listen to his words of wisdom.

Please people don't forget our original site and post over there again. We don't want to see it fade away. It's about the whole family not just Barbaro!!!

  65. FYI....Alex brown wrote that Mr. Jackosn said Margano will likely be ready to race during the fall Belmont meet.

Margano will be a GREAT runner on the weeds. Did great with a top jockey on 12-10-11 so he's got ability and a "tough guy" streak to grab that win. Very determined runner. All "upside"
