Nicanor Racing Today (April 3rd), Post Time 4:33, Race #8...

Nicanor will be making his second start of the year today at Gulfstream Park in the $100,000 Emirates Airlines Appleton Stakes (Grade III).  The race will be run at one mile on the Gulfstream Turf, Julien Leparoux will get the mount for his third time on Nicanor, post time is about 4:33.  On what is sure to be an incredible day of racing at Gulfstream, Nicanor's race is race number eight of twelve races on the card, including the $1,000,000 Florida Derby (Grade I).  Nicanor will be breaking from post position three, "Sayif" was scratched this morning, so we are now down to a field of eight.

$100,000 Emirates Airlines Appleton Stakes (Grade III).
Four year olds and upwards, to be run on the Gulfstream Park turf at one mile.

The field:

1. Little Mike (four year old gelding, high weight of 123 pounds).  Jockey Joe Bravo will get the mount once again on this extremely fast and talented horse, trained by Dale Romans.  Little Mike has a  career mark of 12 starts, with 6 wins, 2 seconds, 0 thirds, with earning's of $305,970.  Morning line of 5/2 odds(clearly the favorite!)

2. Cherokee Artist (six year old, will be carrying 119 pounds).  Jockey Ramon Dominguez has the mount for Graham Motion's experienced colt.  Career mark of 26 starts, 6 wins, 6 seconds, 2 thirds, with earning's of $623,910.  Morning line of 8/1 odds.

3. NICANOR (can't believe he is five years old, where does the time go?).  Nicanor will be carrying 119 pounds today with Julien Leparoux getting the mount for his third time on Nicanor.  This will be just the 15 start for Nicanor, he will be going for his 5th victory, with two seconds and two thirds.  If he wins today, in what should be a very fast race, it would put Nicanor over $200,000 in career earning's, having $144,490 up to this point.  Morning line of 12/1 odds (IMHO, crazy odds, I would have had him about 8/1 odds in this field).

4.  Sayif (Scratched)

5.  Commandeered (four year old, carrying 117 pounds).  John Velazquez has the mount for this lightly raced six year old horse who is trained by Todd Pletcher.  Has a career mark very similiar to Nicanor's, with 3 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, with earning's of $133,263.  Morning line of 3/1 odds (very surprised odds are so low, even though he won his last race in impressive fashion at Gulfstream on Feb. 9).

6.  Rivera Cocktail (five year old, carrying 119 pounds).  Switched trainers after his last race, he is now trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Garrett Gomez will get the mount today.  Rivera Cocktail will be making his fourth start of the year, last racing at Santa Anita in the 1 1/2 mile San Luis Obispo Stakes (Grade II) where he tired and finished seventh in the field of nine (race was run on the dirt after being taken off the turf).  Career mark of 18 starts, 4 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds, with earning's of   $178,107.  Morning line of 6/1 odds.

7.  Successful Mission (five year old gelding, carrying 119 pounds).  Won last time out in an Allowance race on the Gulfstream turf on March 13.  He pulled away from Cherokee Artist in a very exciting stretch run to win by just over one length.  Elvis is in the race, Elvis Trujillo will get the mount again on this Edward Plesa, Jr. trained colt who has career earning's of $208,751 with 6 wins and 2 thirds.  Morning line of 5/1 odds.

8.  Asphalt (four year old colt, carrying 119 pounds).  Asphalt will be ridden by Javier Castellano and is trained by Eddie Kenneally.  He has a career mark of 15 starts, 3 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds, with earning's of $190,694.  Last race out, Asphalt finished a very close fourth in a blanket finish on the Gulfstream turf back on Feb. 26 in an Allowance race.  The next horse in the field, a five year old named "Mikoski", who is trained by Michael Matz, won the race!  Morning line of 10/1 odds.

9.  MIKOSHI (five year old, carrying 119 pounds).  Trained by Michael Matz and will be ridden by Jose Lezcano today, as previously mentioned, Mikoshi is coming off a victory after nearly a four month lay-off!  Mikoshi has a career mark of 4 wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds, with earning's of $208,633.  LOVE this horse, and I expect a huge effort today.  Morning line of 8/1 odds.

What can I say?  At this point in his career, Nicanor will continue to face very talented fields, today is no different.  On paper, this race should be very quick, with at least four who like to have the lead from the get go.  Something will have to give, who will get the lead?  Little Mike will most likely go straight to the lead from the rail.  I will say this, if Little Mike runs like he did last time out, he will win this race hands down!  I am going to go on the record and say he will bounce and not perform like he did last time out, I know, wishful thinking on my behalf!

I will say this until I am blue in the face, Nicanor has to have the lead going into the turn, it is what HE wants and if he doesn't get the lead, he will not win this race.  Julien needs to go against conventional wisdom and do this, if it doesn't work, then Nicanor raced his race and was beaten by more talented horses, enough said.  Nicanor is a different horse in the lead, he is happy and comfortable, and it is what he wants, please Julien, listen to him!  Get the lead, slow him down to fractions around 24 seconds for each quarter, and Nicanor will try his best to hold the field off in the stretch.  If Nicanor is off the pace, he gets frustrated and will fight Julien, which will leave Nicanor not having enough in the stretch run.  I honestly believe Nicanor is a stakes winning horse, he just needs that first stakes victory to boost his confidence and show whoever rides him in the future, "Please listen to me and let me get the lead".  Let's all hope Julien listen's today!

So, if the race plays out like I hope, Nicanor will win his first Stakes race (only if he has the lead!), we shall see.

I will go with a Michael Matz exacta, Nicanor and Mikoshi to finish first and second, with Asphalt hitting the board in third place.

If Little Mike runs his race and doesn't bounce, the rest of the field are running for second place.

Above all, a safe race for all...

I HOPE Julien watched this replay numerous times!  Here is Nicanor's most impressive victory to date (IMHO).

***UPDATE***

FYI,

Nicanor finished 7th in the field of eight.

He broke very sharp from the gate, was right next to Little Mike going into the first turn. IMHO, Nicanor COULD have passed Little Mike, but, once again Julien decided against it.

Nicanor then stayed in second for most of the first turn, within a length of Little Mike. Then, coming out of the turn, Julien seemed to have a hold on Nicanor, then two horses passed Nicanor going into the backstretch. Nicanor was now in fourth on the rail trying to save some ground, I guess? Two more horses passed Nicanor and Julien going into the far turn, now Nicanor was in 6th place.

Turning for home, Nicanor was last and showed some heart by passing one to finish seventh.

I have the utmost respect for Julien, but, he is a terrible fit for Nicanor, IMHO.

Nicanor is a different caliber horse if he doesn't have the lead, why can't these jockey's see this? To me, it is quite obvious, and these jockey's don't have the guts to take him to the lead and see what happens. It really is a shame, I know Nicanor is a better horse then this result.

A safe race for all, and congrats to Mikoshi for hitting the board and finishing fourth.

Nicanor will be back, I just wish Nicanor's future jockey's will listen to him and let him take the lead, it is what he wants and needs to be able to compete with this class of horses, IMHO.

  4. Thank you, Greg, for at least trying to give us the information on the upcoming race. At least we know it is at Gulfstream on Sunday and naturally, I think it is safe to say everyone here is hoping for a win!! And of course, a safe trip. Thank you and I'm sorry you have to deal with note eating computers - I hate stuff like that. Grrrrr! Good luck with it! :)

  6. I wish they could find him a race less than 8f.
Think this will be a tough race for Nicanor, not only with Little Mike again in this race and Asphalt but also Cherokee Artist and Riviera Cocktail are good for a win and I don't know anything about Commandeered yet.
Looking forward to your analysis Greg.

  7. Have a good race Nicanor. Run them into the ground! I wish I could watch on T.V. but I don't think the Florida Derby is even going to be aired. Thanks for the pictures, I love to see them, he is such a beautiful boy.

For those not watching the race live, I will post the results the moment the race is over.

    Godspeed Nicanor...

  12. Sorry about the wrong jockey name. I think that was me trying to swallow the he is on Nicanor again. If this jock is afraid to go to the lead, then he definitely shouldn't be riding Nicanor, now or ever! Let's all hope against hope that he will listen to Nicanor and let him run his race. Then if he gest beaten, he'll(Nicanor) not feel so bad about not winning.

Go Nicanor....we love you whatever happens today!

  13. LOVE that second picture, although of course they are all wonderful...just look at the subject! Thanks for your entreaty to JL that Nicanor be allowed to run "his" race...whether it's right or wrong hardly seems the point because at the age of five he's NOT likely to start rating out of the gate and hopefully some/any jockey will start listening to this horse and let him do it his way, come what may in terms of final placement!

SAFE HOME, NICANOR...because that's all that matters to me!

    Also Good Luck Mikoshi.

    Should be fast paced.

Nicanor will be back, just hope he has a jockey that understands and listens to him!

  21. Poor Nicanor.. I was really disappointed when Julien was getting him behind all these horses.

Think his chances of at least perform well and get a second or third place were destroyed when Commandeered and Succesfull Mission passed him on his outside. Then he lost even more confidence when Cherokee Artist and Mikoshi went by?
Agree with all who say he needs a different jockey, but not to get him on the lead without control and let him run "his race". Just a jockey who can get him on or near the lead and stay free from other horses on his outside.
Didn't seem to me that Nicanor was that bothered of being behind Little Mike but he certainly was when Julien hold him back and the other two horses passed him.

Hope to see Nicanor happy and sound again soon.
    Maybe at Churchill next month?

  22. Thanks "Anonymous" :)

    Keeneland next for Nicanor...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nicanor could have been in front of Little Mike before the two horses came up beside him, had him blocked in, Julien pulled him up and that was the end of it for Nicanor.
I do not understand why they will not allow him to run.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As much as I hate to say it, maybe it's time to change trainers - if he can't get regular jockeys and keeps getting what is left over. Just saying.....

  25. So sad to see Nicky finsh like that. He's too classy to finsh 7th....
Hope it all gets sorted out and we get to see him RUN again....

  26. Agreed!! Am not one to second guess trainer but is anyone home! Would like to know exactly what Matz is telling jockey. Think many opportunities have been lost for Nicky. What a waste!
    Golf Girl

    ReplyDelete
  27. Golf Girl,

Yes, calling Nicanor a "waste" due to the fact he came in seventh place during a race is what I call a "real" fan of the horse. Thanks for your informed opinion...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I felt like he was in the race when he was running second to Little Mike. But as soon as horses started passing him, I could just feel that he wasn't going to run well after that.

I don't understand why they wont let him take the lead. Do you think its the trainer or the Jockey? Surely Matz wouldn't put Julien back in the saddle if he wasn't doing as asked?

I feel like Nicanor is such a better horse than his performance suggested today. Whats bothering me the most though is they keep trying to make him run the same way every race.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've watched the replay of the race a few times, and I still can't figure out what is going on with Nicanor and his jockey. I am no expert so I will not comment on who or what is at fault. I'm just so sad for Nicanor and his connections. He is a better horse than the stats of this race show. I hope he can get into a race where he can run his race and win and get back some confidence. He is and will always be my HEART horse.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What is so frustrating is that Little Mike is allowed to run on the lead from the wire and he's lauded for doing so. Nicanor made a game attempt to get up and overtake him, but wound up on the rail and boxed in and pushed back. Happens every time Julien is aboard him. The horse is going to lose his desire to run and we will be the poorer for it. Nic and Julien Leparoux are incompatible.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Greg, your response back to me was uncalled for. I rarely make comments, but I have followed the Bloodhorse Blog since the beginning and moved over to this one. I also sent Bloodhorse an email expressing my extreme displeasure over their removal of the Barbaro blog.

This may be your blog, but you have opened it up for comments. "What a waste" is a common expression for talent that is not used for maximum effort. In this case, I believe that it's very apparent that we have yet to see the full benefit of Nicky's talent. And yes I am a fan of this family and your sarcastic statement was undeserved. I read a lot of very hateful posts at Bloodhorse and hoped I wouldn't see that hear. Guess I was wrong.
    Golf Girl

  32. Before anyone comments further, I spelled hear wrong, it should be here! Golf Girl

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm the Anonymous that said JL and Nic are incompatible. (Sometimes it is a struggle to get on to this blog correctly.) But I realized that the other Anonymous (Rose) did not mean that Nicanor is a waste -- the way he's being handled by the current jockey riding him is a waste. It is the waste of a beautiful, spirited, competitive horse that prefers to run on the lead, just aa Little Mike does. Little Mike is allowed to do that, even encouraged to do that. Nic is held back from doing that, when that is the only way he has ever won. And THAT is the waste!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I sure wish they could find him a jockey who would let him run on or near the front.

Have he ever run in a turf sprint? Maybe in a sprint his need to run on the front would be encouraged by many jockeys?

    ReplyDelete
  35. this was a very tough spot for nic very fast fractions&race time i feel at this point in his races a softer spot is needed! i don't believe he could have finshed any better trying to be on the lead running faster fractions than little mike he would have been done by 7/8ths so either this has been an attempt to try to teach him to rate over and over or the jockey knew his only chance was to rate him and that failed again miserably love the brothers very much! i always thought of nic as a 1 1/16th type of horse imho!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Golf Girl,

My sincere apology! I took your comment the wrong way, and my response was uncalled for. Also, I agree 100 percent with your statement, "we have yet to see the full benefit of Nicky's talent". Thanks :)

  38. I just wanted to mention, the blanket on Dyna King is from my collection, and is from one of my favorites, "Join in the Dance". The blanket is from the 2009 Breeders' Cup sprint race. Join in the Dance is a five year old colt and just finished in third place in the Maxxum Gold Cup Race on March 5th. He is a stunning colt with a huge heart. He also ran in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, placing 7th. I thought it would be a perfect fit on Dyna King, and I was right :)

  42. FYI,

OK, I am running real late, but, I am off to Aqueduct to see the best three year old in the world, Uncle Mo. He is running in the $1,000,000 Wood Memorial (Grade I) at Aqueduct later today. I think this colt is very special and cannot wait to see him in person for the first time! He reminds me of Barbaro, due to being in a class by himself and one very special horse! I will dedicate my next blog entry to him, and will have my photos and videos posted later tonight or tomorrow morning. Safe raceday for all, and go Uncle Mo :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Greg, all I can say is that I was rooting for Uncle Mo and I still am, but when I was visiting the Fair Hill Training website and saw a picture of Toby's Corner being exercised with his blanket floating in the wind like "Super Colt", I said, oh my, Uncle Mo has competition. Shoot, I listened and even the tracker announcer wasn't giving Toby's Corner any respect as I believe the only time I heard him say Toby's Corner name was when Toby's Corner passed Uncle Mo and Arthur's Tale up at the end.

I don't believe Uncle Mo faded, I just think Toby's Corner had another gear that kicked in at the end.

I love Uncle Mo, but I think Toby's Corner is destined to do some serious shining at the Triple Crown this year. When you visit Fair Hill this year, please get some pictures of Toby's Corner along with the brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kathy--

I loved that picture of Toby's Corner when I saw it too--I have been rooting for him and actually was going to go see him in the Illinois Derby when it was talked he was coming here--have to cheer for the Fair Hill horse! I love the picture though--tough guy trudging it out in the snow and cold! I like Uncle Mo, but if someone was going to beat him then I was happy to see Toby's Corner get there! I expect Uncle Mo to still be a force--just wasn't his day to win. Go Toby Go!!

  45. I am going to Pimlico tomorrow to watch Hard Spun's first runner race. Shes in the first, a 4.5 furlong MSW for 2 yr old fillie's. Her name is Filare L'oro which I am told means Spin the Gold in Italian. Im so excited...The Matz horses will be arriving back at Fair Hill in the next week. I am assuming Margano will be joining them there in the next couple of weeks. I want to go up and see them all when they are all on the grounds. Just so you know since you wont recognize the name, I am Criminal Type.

Have a great time at Pimlico, looks like you should have great weather! Thanks for the head's up on Filare L'oro, hope she does well! Love Hard Spun! Yes, Margano should be at Fair Hill very soon, should be very exciting to see all three brothers together, I can't wait to see them.

  50. Greg, I sent BH the photos, but they have not posted them. If you like I can send them to you to post. Filare L'Oro is a very adorable filly with that stand up mane like her sire She definatly looks like her sire, but she was way overmatched by Bluegrass Atatud, who was visually more mature then the other 2 year olds in the field. Gorgeous filly too, my photos do neither of them justice. They bumped leaving the gate and It took Filare L'oro a while to get going, she made a big move between the 1/4 pole and the wire to come home fourth. I have no doubt she will improve off this start. I also think she wants more distance. I was not as brave as you. I played a 5,6,7 trifacta box and a couple singles on the 6 & 7. Oh well I had fun anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Greg, they did post my photos of Filare L'oro in the maidenwatch on BH. The page title is More Filare L'oro' She looks so much like her daddy, even has that stand up mane. Anyway, there is another Hard Spun getting ready to run, I think at Lone Star or Remington. Also, had one go at OBS on thursday for 625K. Sweet ! Also..I would like to know what you think of Brilliant Speed ? Showing up early for a Dynaformer isn't he ?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Criminal Type,

Great photos of Filare L'Oro, thank you!

Here is the link to your stunning photos, and you are right, she sure looks like her Daddy!

Hard Spun's first runner, Filare L'Oro!

Hard Spun's second runner, a two year old filly named Yvete Sangalo(Hard Spun - Ya Tarra (GB) by Unbridled), ran yesterday at Lone Star. She got bumped at the start, rushed to the lead on the rail, then got squeezed and had to check, falling back some, then ran well and then tired to finish sixth in the field of eight. She looked good and I would throw her first start out due to start and getting squeezed.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Criminal Type,

Regarding Brilliant Speed, while I loved him in the Blue Grass and cashed a very nice win ticket at odds of almost 20-1 on him, the Derby will be extremely tough! I do think he is learning and is very talented, I just think his better races will be on the turf and synthetic tracks, we shall see. The Derby is wide open with a very even field after my top three choices, Uncle Mo, Dialed In, and The Factor(yes, I am sticking with him!). I will box those three along with Brilliant Speed for my trifecta if the race was today. A lot can happen in the next two weeks, fingers crossed they will all be in the starting gate come the first Saturday in May :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Im kind of with you there Greg as far as Derby picks. I am on Dialed in, MMM, The Factor, Toby's Corner and Nehro. I also will throw a few bucks on Animal Kingdom. I have no faith in Uncle MO getting the distance. His three year old preps have been very weak. IMO he Clearly is not the same animal as he was on breeders cup day last fall. I think Speed will lead into the first turn and about halfway up the backside. once they straighten out for the stretch, the closers will be coming. If it rains, all bets are off and Soldat will be my choice. Still I will wait for post positions to be drawn to make my final selections.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ugg, NO Factor in the Derby.. Really sad new's about Sadlers Wells. I was just thinking about him the other day, thinking my god, he is 30 years old. Wonder how much longer he will be with us. Such a prolific sire. He will be missed. Gotta route for Master of Hounds, just because now. Midnight Interlude is blazing a trail at CD. Really Really like the 7 furlong works they are giving Mucho Macho Man. Uncle Mo's work today was not impressive if you ask me....Criminal Type
