Margano and Edgar Racing Today at Gulfstream Park, Post Time 3:49

***UPDATE***

Margano finished in 7th place today today.  Just not his day and he will be back.  To finish 7th and only be behind the winner by just three and a half lengths just shows how evenly matched this talented field was.  Congrats to Star Channel and Javier Castellano for the win, very impressive.

Here is the replay:

What a pleasant surprise we all received when the entries came out for today's races at Gulfstream Park, Margano with Edgar Prado on board!  Coming off his very impressive maiden breaking victory back on December 10th, Margano will try to repeat that effort on the same turf course today in race #8, post time is about 3:49 eastern time.  Edgar Prado will have the mount on Margano, the first time Edgar has been on a brother of Barbaro since Nicanor's racing debut back on January 31, 2009.  A race that saw Nicanor grab a quarter and finish tenth in the field of twelve.  While I am not one to speculate why it has been almost three years since Edgar has been on board a brother of Barbaro, I am just glad that Margano will have the guidance of a Hall of Fame rider, and hope it is the beginning of a wonderful partnership between the two!

Margano enters this race as a three year old, as all racing Thoroughbred's turn a year older the first of January, even though his "real" birthday is March 10th.  He will be facing a field of eight other rivals, with Edgar and Margano breaking from gate #3.  Margano will be carrying the most weight of the field at 122 pounds and has been named as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1.  The high weight is dictated by the conditions of the race, "Weight, 122 Lbs. Non-winners of a race at a mile or over since December 8, 2011 Allowed 2 Lbs. Such a race since November 8, 2011 Allowed 4 Lbs.", Margano is the only one in the field that has had a victory at a mile or over since December 8th, hence the weight of 122 pounds (which I don't think will be a factor at all).  I will add that I think this is a very wise move by Mr. Tagg and the Jackson's to continue Margano's progression on the turf, a surface he seems very comfortable racing on.  With that said, I fully expect to see Margano give dirt a shot after today's race, but, let's talk about that after today's start.

Since his maiden victory, Margano has had three impressive works at Gulfstream Park, all on the dirt with the latest coming this past Wednesday, where Margano went five furlongs "handily" in a time of 1:00.65, ranking second of five working that distance.

Rather then break the field down as usual, I am just going to sit back and enjoy today's race.  Of course I believe this will be Margano's second victory of his young career.  With that said, I will say the top three will be Margano and Edgar, Star Channel, and Africanist to finish out the top three in this very evenly matched field of young three year olds.  Also, watch out for Argentine Tango to come flying down the stretch, he is the one I am scared of the most, even though I left him out of my top three due to him just racing two weeks ago and I expect he might be a little tired, I hope.

  1. What happened, Greg? Did they lose the rest?
Frankly, with Edgar aboard Margano, the rest don't even matter...Margano must have really impressed Edgar on the 10th of December! And, I'd bet anything that Edgar has already been aboard him for one of those workouts. They've probably bonded already! So exciting and tomorrow will be, too!

  2. Knowing Edgar, he gets very close to the horses he rides. And with Margano being a brother of Barbaro, I can imagine the bonding that they've already done. I am thrilled that Margano and Edgar will be riding as a team instead of as rivals, and as Daffodil said, Margano must've impressed Edgar on the 10th of December. Maybe he looked so much like Barbaro, that maybe Edgar decided that he wanted to see if Margano is truly like his brother? Who knows. I hope that Edgar was on him for at least some one of the workouts. Good luck, Edgar and Margano.

  5. Bonjour Margano,

Give Edgar Prado a heck of a ride as he has been winning at Gulfstream Park either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (in the money).

    Good luck, Margano!

You can do it. You are my Kentucky Derby hopeful for 2012.

I assume that Mr. Tagg has connected you with Edgar prior to the race so a bond has been established already.

I am hoping for a link on this forum to watch the race later this evening since I have already made plans to see War Horse today.

My husband will be babysitting the children (the dogs) so I can see the movie as above-mentioned.

    Je vous t'aime.

    Once again, good luck, Margano!

I am eager to see the replay of the race.

    Thank you!

  6. I for one can't wait.:) run like the wind for Edgar, Margano, and we will see you in the winners circle.(figuratively of course, as Gulfstream, like all racetracks, is a bit of a hike from where I live in Alabama, maybe one day though!)

  8. Broke bad, wasn't comfortable on the rail, stuck behind horses, let's just say he never fired.:( I realized earlier today, that Margano has never broken closer to the rail than the 7, his worst race until now, and his best race was when he started from the furthest outside, the 9. Maybe next tome, he never looked comfortable to me, and Edgar didn't try to get much out of him.

  9. I think Edgar was scared out of his mind that entire race, to be honest. I hope that he gets another ride on Margano, but I do think that dirt may be Margano's calling. Good job, Margano, better luck next time out. Say hi to Edgar and all for me. Love you both.

We love you no matter what Margano!!!

  11. I would love to know that as well, Lou in TX, and did anyone else notice that Edgar had to check Margano in towards the beginning, right near the first turn. I wonder if he was panicking? It was lovely to see them both though, and I believe that Margano may be a dirt horse.

    ~American Quail Lover

  12. Yes, American Quail, Edgar did not look very comfortable, which I think was making Margano uncomfortable. He never even really asked Margano to pick up in the stretch. He never took him out in the clear either. Javier gave him a MUCH better ride last time, and coincidentally, Javier rode the winner.

  13. Well, the best part is he was only beat 3.5 lengths. Someone else already pointed out Margano did not break well and was positioned in the back of the field going to the first turn, then Margano was pulling pretty hard around the turn but had horses in front and outside Edgar had to check him a little. It looked to me like there were s couple times along the backside and on the far turn where Edgar tried to get out from the rail but couldn't because there were horses outside of him. All the way down the backstretch I was yelling, Get him out of there Edgar ! You could see he was done when they entered the stretch. I think all the brothers prefer to be outside of horses when they run. Hopefully he will do better next time out, he sure had a bad trip this time.

  15. Criminal Type, i think he was beaten a lot more than 3.5 lengths, I know that's what equibase said, but he was out of the screen shot. I think it was 5+. Maybe im wrong, but he was waaay out of it.

  16. Jiminy,

It was about 3.5 lengths, I will have the replay posted in a few minutes. Just not Margano's day today, it happens.

I just think a combo of everything made it a tough day for Margano, no excuses, just not his day. The slow start, on the rail, speeding up to get closer to the leaders, had to check a little when #4 came in a bit at top of the stretch losing some momentum, then Edgar really didn't push him knowing today wasn't going to be a victory.

    He will be back :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I commend Edgar for taking such good care of him and for riding him even though that was not anything Edgar thought he'd ever be able to do after Barbaro and Nicanor's debut and the impact of those things -- he loves the brothers as we do, and I believe he especially cares for this baby brother. I hope they'll team up again...soon!

  20. Margano finish hist last race and he won on the of 1:44.21 while this horse of Todd Pletcher finish at 1:41.58. I think Margano just run the same the last when he won the race, he just beaten right now with a better horses. Margano need to improve i think in able to show us that he have something in him for us to think he really got something or eles I will loose a hope that he will copy at least what hes big brother Barbaro does. IM not saying all or everyone but im sure a lot of us hoping this brothers will run like a champion like barbaro if im wrong so be it but i guess not. Race horse has been built to race and run, accident happen in some cases not only in horses racing but everything, after that we always need to move on. He need to be push if he need it to in able to see haw far he can go so hes trainer knows that to see where is he belong.

That is too bad that you came in 7th. That is not good but I am still hopeful as it is still early in the game. You need more practice.

  22. Anonymous,

I just wanted to point this out since you brought up the times of this race and Margano's last race. One cannot compare this race to the last when it comes to times, the rail was set at 20 feet in Margano's win and at 12 feet today. Also, the winner today, Star Channel won in 1:41.58 with Margano's time at 1:42.18, a DIFFERENCE of just .60 of a second. Also, he didn't lose by 3.5 lengths, it was actually 2.75 lengths. All things considered, another learning experience for Margano, who considering had some traffic problems and got bumped at the top of the stretch by the #4 horse, it was a good race, just not the results we all had hoped for. That's all :)

  25. Bless you, Edgar, for bringing Margano home safely. I hope that they team up again. Edgar looked horrified the entire race, and I'm guessing Margano was picking up on that. Thanks for the explanation, Greg, it meant a lot. I do give Margano credit for running the best he could.

    Margano (3-Year-Old Colt)

    Date: January 18, 2012
    Track: GULFSTREAM PARK
    Distance: Four Furlongs
    Time: 48:85 Breezing
    Track Condition: Fast
    Surface: Dirt
    Rank: 5/16

As for Nicanor it was said he has given time off to enjoy his silly self.
Then someone brought up it might be that he has some physical or mental issues and maaybe just lost interest in racing, that's not confirmed in any way but could be.
We'll have to wait and see.

  30. Margano ran a great race and hung in there 'till the end. The field was very evenly matched and Margano did not lose by alot. In the end it looks like he got stuck in the "traffic jam" and there was not a lot of room to manuever. Edgar did a great job and most important of all they finished safely. He'll get them next time.

Hoping to see Margano and Lentenor race soon, too.

  35. Lenny is nominated for the grade 3 Tampa bay Derby on I think February 25. I would think he would probably have one more race before then, as a tune up, I wouldnt think he would enter off a 2 month break, just my thoughts though, if he does have another start before then, it should be within the next 2 weeks. As far as Nick goes, for me, 3 months would be the bare minimum. Right now, I'm sure after 6 months off, he's not fit. Look what happened when Rachel had 6 months off, and only 5 weeks breezing. I would want him to be completely fit and confident off this break, I do want to see him run, but i wamt the time to be right, and for him to not be rushed into things. I saw an article on drf the other day, saying both barbaros(union rags) and Smarty Jones trainers had major triple crown contenders, then the writer said why mot throw funny cides barclay tagg into the mix! I laughed, and thought to myself, he will be in the mix, and with a brother of Barbaro! (Hopefully ;) )

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
  50. Of course animal kingdom will go to post as favorite, but since big brown, no Derby winner has won another race, although some have been close. Also, remember he is going to dubai, so hes not going to be tuned to the max. He also has not raced since the belmont, and I don't think he's won anything major on grass. Lentenor is peaking right now, and just ran the best race of his life. And remember, lentenor ran 4th behind ICE BOX an the DIRT in the Florida Derby. And what did ice box do after that? He ran a FAST CLOSING SECOND to Super Saver in the KENTUCKY DERBY. all being said, I think animal kingdom will be very vulnerable, and lentenor is sitting on the race of his life. Barring a bad trip, I think lentenor can catch animal kingdom in the final strides! Long post lol
    Jiminy Cricket
P.s. this is saying that Lentenor does actually run. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. Speaking of Ice Box, he is standing at stud now at Calumet.

Given that there are not many intact male offspring sired by Dynaformer around (many must have inherited their father's temperament, and end up gelded)I have often thought that if any (or all) of the brothers end up as graded stakes winners they will be given a chance at stud.

Would be good to see more stallions of that bloodline given a chance. Good to have some outcrosses for all of the Northern Dancer, Bold Ruler, and Mr. Prospector line mares out there - healthy for the breed as a whole.

I think Animal Kingdom will have a solid four year old season. (and thanks to his connections for not rushing him off to the breeding shed after his injury!!) However, he will probably not be at his best in this particular race, given he is coming off of an injury and a long layoff. It is a true prep race for him to blow out his pipes and add to his fitness and bottom before he ships overseas.

Lentenor is hot right now, and set a track record his last time out.

This might be Lenny's time to really get a chance to shine. :-) And with AK in the race, there should be a lot of media attention. :-)

    1. Wwho was it that said, "Dynaformers take time to mature, but they are worth the wait!"? How very true of our very beautiful Lentenor.

  52. I think Jiminy Cricket is right. Lentenor could very well catch Animal Kingdom in the final strides, should Lentenor race. I hope that he does. The media attention would be vast, though I think it would be good for the sport in general. Barbaro Brother vs 2011 Kentucky Derby winner. Who wouldn't be interested to see that? I do agree that the Dynaformer babies do develop late, but they are all beautiful. Barbaro was probably an exception to developing late, but without a doubt, he was stunning.

  54. Just an fyi, Margano is Triple Crown nominated! So, they are obviously HOPING to get him there, but it will be a wait and see as to wether he can get the graded stakes earnings. I for one hope that the next time he runs they try him on dirt, they don't have a whole lot of time to get an allowance turf win, allowance dirt win, and get the graded stakes earnings. I think if they want him in the TC, they will put him in an allowance dirt race next, and if he runs well, they should step him up to a graded stakes race.

  56. Lentenor-5 furlongs 1:02.6 on the dirt 6/16. I should think if nothing goes wrong, Margano should be entered within the next 10 days, but I'm scared somethings going on, because he hasnt worked since the 22nd of january. Lentenor may also be entered within the next 10 days, or he may be working up to the Tampa Bay Stakes. I expect it to be a month or so more before nicanor works, because we want him fit. It's going to be good to see Nick race again, though.

  57. Hello all, hope everyone is well...
I can't believe that we are now into all the Derby prep races; a lot of exciting prospects this year. I personally would love to see Graham Motion put Howe Great on dirt and have a Matz/Motion exacta of Union Rags and Howe Great. Two fantastic horsemen and overall gentlemen, great for the sport.

Looking forward to the brother's next races!! Wondering if there is any news on Nicanor. I think Lentenor is going to have a really good year, and of course we all are eager to see if Margano likes the dirt! Thanks for keeping us updated, Greg!

  58. Also, I forgot that I had a question to ask. I just saw the passing of a great sire, Big Brown's sire, Boundary. They say he was euthanized from the "infirmaries of old age". Does anyone know what types of things they consider infirmaries? I am not sure if it would be similar to a dog perhaps of not being able to stand, discomfort or ragged breathing...? Is Criminal Type still around? thanks all!

    1. Criminal Type is indeed around, just been really busy over the summer and fall, now that the weather is cold I am around more. Aretmis, to answer your question, there are a variety of issues that effect horses as they get older. or rather elderly. Many times the issues are nuerological or musculoskelatal. Some also develope Cushings disease, hoof ailmants. I think the same basic reasoning holds true with horses as with humans, health issues compound upon themselves as they age. I think it far more caring and humane to put a hourse down who's quality of life is deteriorating to the point of pain. Too bad humans are not allowed this option.

  60. I hope that Margano is alright. As for Big Brown's sire, many things can be "infirmities." Colic is what took my thirty plus year old pony. He was having trouble moving around himself. Reasons that could have resulted in the euthanization of Big Brown's sire could include severe discomfort when moving, little interest in food or water, and others.

  61. Anybody remember that little filly running around with Margano in his weanling pictures? I decided to look her up, her name is Sweet Assay, she is unworked in the last 60 days, and unraced. Her dam is unraced, and her older half sister is a 2007 mare, but didn't start racing until late 2010. Just thought yall might like to find out. :) Anyways, apparently they are giving Margano a breather before a tough spring campaign, atleast this is what I read on the Mill Ridge site.

  65. Animal kingdom will no longer be running in the Tampa Bay Stakes, he has been entered in an allowance on the 18. Without animal kingdom, depending on who enters, Lentenor may very well start as favorite. Of course, that is as long as Lentenor enters as well, let's hope Little Mike (that's his name, right?) Doesn't enter lol, but of course he wouldn't, he only beats up on Nicanor at gulfstream.;)
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  66. Little Mike....I remember him. I think Lentenor, who has seemed to improve dramatically since his last meeting with Little Mike, could beat him. But an easy field for our boy would be good as well. I hope to see him racing in the Tampa Bay.

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
  67. Little Mike ran against nicanor, not Lenny, doubles partner is the main one that Lentenor has had trouble w/. He beat Lentenor several years ago and ended up being a nice stakes horse. I think Lenny is probably a better horse than Nick. Margano will probably end up being better than both.

  72. I have a feeling that Margano will run in the Florida derby and try Union Rags. Trainer knows this breed are late maturing and they are not pushing margano. (see what happened on nick and len). OR there is something wrong with him that untill now they were not even training him or setting him up on any race allowance or stakes. But yes he need to run 1 or 2 race before facing Union Rags in Florida derby, if ever he will run there that is gonna be a good long shot to bet coz we know Union Rags will be a heavy favorite. Anyway imwaiting for the Tampa Stakes for Lentenor and im betting $300 WPS on him plus the pick4 i gues. Anyone know how to post pic here so I can share with you guys my ticket to look at it.

  75. Now that I've looked at it, this isn't a push-over field, here's what I saw from it, in order of post position.

Roman Tiger-2 of 23, his last time to even place was May 2011, his last time to place in a stakes was August 2010, and his last win was May 2010.

Versailles Road-3 of 18, his highest level of win is an allowance, the other 2 are a maiden and a claiming event, he's never run higher than an allowance, and he is coming off of 2 runner-up efforts

Union Bowman-5 of 17, he comes off a runner-up effort and hasn't won since Febraury 2011, he was 9th in last year's Tampa Bay Stakes.

Swift Warrior-3 of 13, won 2 starts back in the ungraded Rushaway Stakes in May 2011

El Commodore-4 of 16, coming off a win, that win was off an 11 month lay-off, he's never run higher than an allowance, and took 7 tries to break his maiden

Hoofit-4 of 20, won last October in a grade 3 stakes, comign off 2 lackluster 11th place efforts, in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and Ft. Lauderdale Stakes

Duke Of Mischief-7 of 25, last won the Charles Town Classic(III) in April 2011, he hasn't run on the turf since I think his 4th start, which was a runner-up effort in an ungraded stakes, his only win on the turf was in a maiden claiming, he's had several grade 3 wins on the dirt, and 1 grade 2 win, he's by far the most accomplished in the field

Successful Mission-8 of 19, several listed stakes wins and a grade 3 win, last won the ungraded Elkwood Stakes in May 2011

Guy's Reward-4 of 27, last won an allowance in May 2011, graded stakes-placed several times, but no stakes win

Moryba-5 of 19, last won October 2011, last ran November 2011, stakes-placed, never won a stakes

    Allie's Event-7 of 22, won last out, January 2012, graded stakes runner-up

Lentenor-I don't think we need to outline his career ;)I think this is a good post for him, so he doesn't get stuck inside as usual

UptownCharlyBrown-Ok, I love this little guy, maybe it's the name?-2 of 11, last won January 2010, disqualified to last in that year's Belmont due to his weight pad falling off

  78. In reply to an email inquiry, robin smullen (barclay tagg's assistant trainer and his wife) replied that Margano is getting a "freshener" (aka time off) in prep of a "big campaign this Spring". Margano is fine, happy, and just being a horse currently. He had 3 races as a 2 year old and an early race as a 3 year old. The trainers and the Jacksons agreed that he needed a break.

  80. I knew it, i really want him to run in the Florida derby to see if he can run and compete with the big boys like Union rags. if he wins good, if not then let him refresh, not running in the Kentucky Derby for not having enough money but racing does not end there that will only the beginning for him. At least he try and show what he can do. If he win now that is totaly totaly different story with a boom on his racing career, good luck. Win or loose im with this brothers.

  85. I think Lentenor will do well tomorrow! :-)

It wouldn't surprise me if Margano is kept off the Kentucky Derby/Triple Crown Trail in favor of staying on the turf - and the important races for three year olds on grass such as the Virginia Derby and Secretariat are a bit later in the year than the Triple Crown races. So a break right now would make a lot of sense if they are thinking of the important turf stakes later on in the summer.

  86. Great pictures of Nicanor and Lentenor. Seems like it was a very good visit. The 2 brothers have a bit of an attitude and a friendly disposition at the same time. I think they like their routine. Nicanor is thicker in the neck area than Lentenor, but both are stunning.

    ReplyDelete

  89. The brothers look beautiful, kind of funny to hear how grumpy they are at nap time! Lentenor is stunning, nicanor looks a lot thicker built. I can't believe Mr. Matz had Lenny 150 lbs overweight! I for one can't wait to see Lenny run this afternoon, I wonder why he had wraps on and nick didn't?

  91. Howdy there, Jiminy Cricket. I would agree that Nicanor is more thickly build then Lentenor, but Margano seems to be even thicker. They are indeed "grumpy" when they want to rest. When Mr. Matz had Lentenor, I think our boy was coming off a very long lay off. He had injured his shoulder 10 months before. Lentenor has been injured in the past, so I think the wraps are a precautionary measure. Nicanor has very strong legs. He was injured in his first race when he grabbed his quarter, but otherwise, as far as I know, he hasn't been injured.

  92. I read o Mill Ridge's website that Nicanor has been retired from racing and is in Ocala, Florida. Does anybody know anything else?

    Chris K.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nicanor is still in Florida from what I am hearing. I talked to someone recently who told me that Nicanor was a very anxious horse who never got over his nervousness. Lentenor has also been retired, however his immediate fate is much more certain. He will be standing at Calumet Farm in Lexington Kentucky for the 2013 season, alongside His brother from another mother, Aussie superstar Americain. It appears as though Mr Kelley who now controls Calumet has a barnful of mares who were purchased with Dynaformer in mind. These mares will now visit the son's. I wish Lentenor much success at stud, Hopefully he will pass along those classic genes that were part of what made his big brother Barbaro so special.

  94. Shortly after this news was reported, we learned that Nicanor would stand at Shamrock Farm in Woodbine, Maryland. Congratulations and best wishes to our beautiful Nicanor. Both boys can become just happy horses while making beautiful babies that will carry their wonderful bloodlines. We will miss them on the track, but will rejoice in their new and wonderful, idyllic lives. We love them very, very much.
