Dynaformer (April 1, 1985-April 29, 2012)

Sadly, we lost the great Dynaformer today, on what would have been Barbaro's ninth Birthday.  My hope is that Barbaro greeted his Father when he crossed over, and they are both running pain free today.  My heartfelt condolences to all at Three Chimney's that took such wonderful care of Dynaformer over the years.

From Jen Roytz at Three Chimney's Farm:(http://www.threechimneys.com/)

One of the breed's premier stallions, Dynaformer, has passed away at the age of 27 at Robert and Blythe Clay's Three Chimneys Farm. The stallion had been pensioned after suffering an aortic valve rupture the afternoon of Saturday, April 14th while in his stall.
Known internationally for siring such top class athletes as Kentucky Derby winner BARBARO, Melbourne Cup winner AMERICAIN, $4.7 million dollar-earner PERFECT DRIFT, European Champion Two-Year-Old Filly RAINBOW VIEW, English Champion Three-Year-Old Colt LUCARNO, multiple Grade 1 winner RISKAVERSE, multi-millionaire DYNEVER, and many others, Dynaformer will be remembered as one of the most prolific sires the Thoroughbred breed has ever seen.
"Dynaformer impacted the industry in a way that few ever have or will," said Three Chimneys President Case Clay. "More than that, though, he was an awe-inspiring horse to be around. He commanded respect and his toughness was undeniable to the very end. He reminded me a lot of Seattle Slew in that when you were around him, you knew you were in the presence of greatness."
Dynaformer was without question one of the most globally successful sires in the Thoroughbred industry. With 21 crops to race, his progeny have earned more than $105,000,000. Dynaformer is the sire of 130 stakes winners, including 61 graded stakes winners, 25 Grade 1 stakes winners, and 18 millionaires. These numbers are the best in each respective category of all active sires.
Dynaformer ranks in the top one-half of one percent of all sires by average earnings per starter.
"Dynaformer's tough spirit will continue to influence our breed for many years to come.  He reminds us that looks aren't everything, and that the will to win is that intangible ingredient we are all striving to find," said Robert Clay, owner of Three Chimneys Farm.
The caliber and quantity of races won by progeny of Dynaformer is unprecedented. Sons or daughters of Dynaformer have won the Kentucky Derby, One Thousand Guineas, Melbourne Cup, Irish Oaks, Stephen Foster Handicap, English St. Leger, German Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, American Oaks, Hollywood Derby, Shadwell Turf Mile, Santa Margarita Invitational, Flower Bowl Invitational, Santa Maria Handicap, Yorkshire Oaks, Beverly D. Stakes, Diana Handicap, Florida Derby, Hempstead Handicap, Gazelle Handicap, Matriarch Stakes and numerous other black type events.
Four of his daughters have won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland's fall meet, a record for any stallion.
"He commanded respect and total attention at all times," said Three Chimneys stallion manager Sandy Hatfield. "He had earned every bit of his reputation as being one of the toughest stallions in the industry, but when it came to his job in the breeding shed, he was a total professional. In my opinion, our industry has lost one of the greatest sires it will ever see."
Known not only for his propensity to sire high caliber racers, but also his curmudgeon-like attitude, Dynaformer had legions of fans both within the Thoroughbred business and among the general equestrian community.
Dynaformer's progeny were known for their soundness, durability, and heart. They not only excelled on the flat, but over jumps as well. His son, McDynamo, is the winner of an unprecedented five Breeders' Cup Steeplechase races, and countless other sons and daughters went onto successful post-racing careers in the show ring and as field hunters.
Thoroughbred owner/breeder and show horse owner Ann Banks had this to say about Dynaformer: "I was always on the lookout for offspring of Dynaformer as flat and steeplechase horses. They were the full package; good bone, athleticism, fabulous movers, and a flexibility and natural movement like no other. The breeding industry, the flat and steeplechase industries, and the show world have truly lost one of their greatest producers."
Dynaformer will be impacting the Thoroughbred breed for decades to come. His daughters have produced 78 stakes winners and that number grows month-by-month.
Dynaformer, whose passing came on what would have been the ninth birthday of his most famous son, Barbaro, will be buried in the Three Chimneys stallion cemetery next to stable mates Rahy and Wild Again.
After suffering a significant cardiac episode in his stall on April 14, Dynaformer was immediately pensioned from stallion duty. After Dynaformer had been stabilized, an ultrasound performed on April 15th reveled several holes in his heart as a result of the heart attack, one measuring eight centimeters long and two others measuring two centimeters each.
Dynaformer had been resting comfortably, eating well, and maintaining his daily turnout routine in the weeks following his heart scare, but his health took a turn the evening of Saturday, April 28th.

"Dynaformer told us when it was his time to go," said Dr. Jim Morehead, Three Chimneys' resident veterinarian.  "Amazingly, he had been comfortable after his initial crisis on April 14 and had been able to go to his paddock daily.  A normal horse would not have survived his initial cardiac episode. He did everything on his terms, including deciding when he'd had enough."

The public is invited to pay their respects to Dynaformer during the annual Three Chimneys Derby Week Open House on Thursday, May 4 from 10:00am until 1:00pm. A memorial service for Dynaformer will be held at 12:30 during the event in the stallion cemetery.

Rest in Peace Dynaformer...

  4. Greg the ole guy did it his way, as he always did. Such spunk all his life but he gave us so many great horses and will be greatly missed. Running with Barbaro now so just maybe his gentle son will rub some of that feistyness out of him so that he can enjoy his new life running with the heavenly herd.

  5. The passing of DYNAFORMER is incredibly, incredibly sad.

His passing on the day of BARBARO's birthday brings even more poignancy to the story of this family.

It's the end of an era . . . DYNAFORMER was an era. You almost thought he was tenacious enough to live forever. You did very well, DYNAFORMER!

You are so well loved . . .

  18. I had so hoped he would have a few years to sun his old bones in his paddock, grazing peacefully, and getting every bit of pampering the superb staff at Three Chimneys could give him...

Instead as I type this he is a mighty herd stallion with a big band of mares, racing against the wind across the prairies and through the pine woods of the Sacred Lands.

Enjoy outrunning the wind and outshining the stars, great one!

  19. Beautiful collage of DYNAFORMER and his La Ville Rouge boys - Barbaro, Nicanor, Lentenor and Margano.

Nicely done Greg, along with your pairing of the youthful and elder DYNAFORMER photos. The giant of a stallion!!! Beautiful in my eyes, regardless of the dismissal of his looks!

But we seem to be forgetting about the beautiful 11 La Ville Rouge still at Mill Ridge, no? So we have yet another DYNAFORMER among others from the 2011 crop to watch with great anticipation and fondness!

    Let's not leave him out!

  20. You need not worry, Karen, we will not be leaving out the little one. We do not have any recent pictures, so we are not sure how he has grown or how he looks now. But even in old age, Dynaformer was beautiful. He still held the look of a horse with spirit, strength, and defiantly the look of a horse who knows how great of a legacy is carrying him on.

  21. I resented bitterly the dismissal of his appearance -- I thought he was gorgeous and just magnificent. I am still so saddened by this
sudden death of a great stallion, as well as other recent events. We
need Margano!! He had a great work this morning at Belmont: 5furlongs in 1.00.12, = 1 out of 3 (there were actually 9 at that distance). He's pointing towards something soon, I think.

  23. I had a strange feeling after hearing of his first episode a couple of weeks ago that his time was drawing to a close. But I still wasn't prepared to hear it. Dynaformer was a true champion and a true legend. Barbaro received a great gift meeting his father on his birthday. Now they both are racing each other (and others)and having a grand ole' time. He was tough old guy, as well as absolutely gorgeous with a regal bearing. I'll miss you forever.

  24. Hi!

So sad to hear of Dynaformer's death.

Isn't it rather interesting that he died on Barbaro's 9th birthday?

I was so hoping that he would survive.

I have no idea what the life span of a horse actually is. Does
    anyone know on this forum?

I have always wondered why he had an aggressive personality. Was he abused in some way? Or it just him?

Barbaro's youngest brother will be a year old on May 18th.

Happy Birthday to the youngest brother! I don't think he has been named yet.

    Thank you!

    Lise from Maine

  25. A horses expected life span is 25-30, for TB's, I've noticed they usually don't make it to 25, much less 27. He lived a very long time. I think the personality was just him, I have never heard of him evr being mistreated.

  26. Nugget, our palomino, was in his late 30's, possibly his early 40's when he passed on from colic. He damaged his teeth, so our equine dentist could not made a very accurate reading. But he was positive that he was in his 30's or older. I wonder if Nugget met Dynaformer...

  27. The first school horse I ever rode was in his 40's. He was still going pretty strong at that point, but is probably dead by now, as that was back in '03. My mare is fixing to turn 25, and we tell people that and they are like wtf?!?!?! you've got to be kidding me (pardon the language). I still jump her 3'4. But, the average is supposed to be 25-30, and from what I've seen ex-racehorses/turned stud/broodmare normally only make it to 25, it's quite an accomplishment to hit 30, 27 is great. We also take care of a gelding that's 26 or 27, his buddy died last year of natural causes, and was around the same age.

And bode did it all off the rail(the other horses that took the rail-19 and 20) so obviously the rail was the worst part of the track. He still finished 2nd, and how much history was against him? And those fractions, that's out of 138 derbies. Erm, who else thinks bode is going to be absolutely amazing?

  45. I was in full swing for Bodemeister. I was overjoyed when I saw him ahead by three in the stretch. I thought he had it, I really did, considering that I had picked Bodemeister to win. But I will give credit to I'll Have Another for winning. If the pace were slower, I think Bodemeister could have held off I'll Have Another. Well, sadly, Take Charge Indy suffered a bone chip during the race. He should be fine though.

  48. It was a very nice work out of the gate and he ended up 6th of 88 horses at the distance when all was said and done at Belmont this morning. Nice Job Margano ! Congrats to the Jacksons on Penns Grants win a couple days ago. Margano should be making a start soon. I'd love to see him win coming off the layoff, but thats asking a lot. I am wodering if BTagg is considering the Peter Pan for him, then perhaps the Belmont? Probably wishful thinking on my part, wth, why not? The reason all these boys have missed time is probably because of growth spurts. A lot of times when horses have these spurts it is not evenly distributed and you have to wait a couple months for the front half to catch up with the back half or vice versa. It makes them "ungainly" lol. If you check Dynaformers progeny you will see a TON of them didnt see success until they were 4 or better in age. The are slow to develop with a few exceptions, Barbaro being one.

I take nothing away from I'll have Another, Great Job and masterful ride. I did have him on my ticket along with Dullahan and Went the Day Well. So I cashed in but, man I was dissapointed. However, I still have faith in Union Rag's. I think He will be back in the Preakness and he will have a new rider. As I recall, we were not very pleased with the rides Julien Leparoux gave one of the brothers, or was it both ? I knew 100 yrds out of the gate he had no chance after being slammed between Take Charge Indy and Dullahan. Thankfully the horse is fine. Best of Luck and a quick recovery to Take Charge Indy who is scheduled to have surjury tomorrow to remove the chip from his front left ankle. Kudos to Colom O'Donoughue for easing Daddy Long Legs out of the race once he started laboring on the rail. I love jockeys who take care of their horses instead of driving them on.

I'll have Another and Lava Man are flying into BWI (baltimore) at 4 PM this afternoon. Union Rags is on his way home to Fair Hill and Bodemeister remains at Churchill Downs and is a maybe at this point. I am going out to Pimlico Friday morning about 5 am and I can't wait to see Lava Man..the 5millionaire.

  49. I had not heard that Daddy Long Legs was struggling. I am grateful towards the jockeys, all of them, who take care of their horses like Edgar did with Barbaro and now, Colom with Daddy Long Legs. I hope to see Bodemesister back for the Preakness. And as you said, Dearnhardtrlz3, the brothers are slow developers. There are some new pictures from April 18th of Margano working at Belmont, and I must say, he looks much more filled out. Thank you for all of the information regarding this year's Derby runners.

  52. AQL, Colom said that Daddy Long Legs was struggling because the track was a lot deeper then any surface he has raced on previously. He said the horse prefers a firmer surface. I heard the rail was particularly deep on Derby day and racing was much better 3 or 4 paths out, exactly where I'll Have Another was running.

  55. Since the Jacksons seem to want the brothers kept on synthetics/turf my guess would be an allowance race for him to get back into the swing of things followed by the Hill Prince Stakes in June (a mile on the turf for 3YO's) if Margano runs at Belmont rather than the Peter Pan/Belmont on the dirt.

Of course, it is not that far for him to be shipped to any number of other east coast tracks for other races.

We will just have to wait and see...

Given how many of the colts he has run against have gone on to run in graded stakes (some of them winners)I fully expect him to be a stakes runner if all goes well- and soon!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anonymous, I agree with you. I, however, believe that Margano would do better on dirt. His workouts defiantly support this. But we shall see.

  59. Gosh, when you consider all the variables which must align to provide a winning race -- track conditions (which lane on the track is best), jockey's instructions, etc. Getting the horse primed and ready is only a part of the equation. It's a wonder any horse wins more than once and that seems to be a fluke, sometimes.

    Daffodil

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's not really that much of a wonder. Unless the best horse gets a bad trip, or a bad ride, the best horse usually wins.

  62. Margano's workouts sure suggest they are getting him ready to go soon.

My guess is that his trainer is waiting for them to card an appropriate race (probably a turf allowance for 3YO's or possibly an overnight turf stake for 3YO's) at Belmont for him to run in.

Barclay Tagg is well known for being very careful in bringing along promising youngsters. His goal is a long and productive multi-year career and therefore does not push young horses into races they are not ready to run in.

Margano is in the hands of an expert horseman, who will always do what he thinks is best for the colt.

While it can be difficult to wait, knowing from the workouts that he is doing very well right now, the wait will be worth it. :-)

Sounds like Lentenor will also be running soon. Wonder if he will be in an allowance or a stakes this time? Besides Pimlico and Belmont, Delaware Park and Monmouth either have started or will be starting their meets very soon. Lots of choices in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, all easy van trips for him!

  66. With the sad news of dynaformer, I am looking forward to seeing Margano and Lentenor on the track again. I hope everyone enjoyed the Derby, I was sad to see Union Rags have a bad trip and wished Julien could have moved him at any point there was a pocket in the beginning of the race- watching the overhead, you see the spots in the race where there is the coulda, woulda, shoulda. But thankfully no one was injured more than 2 of my picks, Take Charge Indy and his ankle chip, and now Gemologist with a foot bruise- which almost makes you glad to know that he was protecting himself by running subpar rather than lack of talent. It will be a great Belmont I think. It was nice to see I'll Have Another win, I was rooting for him as one I liked but had some doubts after the 19 hole. Well that is all for now.. hope everyone is doing well. 82. I posted that last one to soon, I should have looked at the entries too. Seems like a nice group of horses. He is running against Zenyatta's half brother Souper Spectacular. Very cool, I have not seen him run, but hope Lenny beats him..haha. Rosie is riding one of Barcley Tagg's two entries in this race. Shes terrific at getting the horse home first, gotta watch her. I don't understand why Yankee Fortune is the M/L favorite when he hasn't hit the board this year. A couple decent horses in here I have seen run including Rustler Hustler who I want to say blew the turn at Aquaduct or Belmont last year, shook off his jockey and went over the rail and back to the barn, Not sure If I am right or not.

Anyway, Now im excited for more then the Preakness on Saturday. GO Lentenor. Good Luck to Michael with his other colt Teeth of the Dog in the Preakness. We could have an all Maryland trifecta with him, Graham Motions Went the Day Well and Tiger Walk (Sagamore Farm) both of whom Steve Haskin saw in person and said they both look spectacular. As much as I would like to see a triple crown winner, I will be over the moon if any of our Maryland based horses win.

  83. MARGANO is entered in the Tiller S. at Belmont on Sunday!
It's a 7 furlongs turf race, Ramon Dominguez will have the mount. He will break from post position 2 in a field of 8 horses.
And if you ask me, this should be an easy task for him.

So we have two brothers running this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous, thank you for the information on Margano! At last, he can show himself! Ramon Domingeuz is a great jockey, therefore Margano is in good hands. Two brothers running this weekend, I am in heaven!

  86. Looking at Margano's race, I think he is the class of the field, due to the competition he has beaten (Silver Max). Looking at these horses, only 2 or 3 actually had a turf win (I only looked at their wins). And none of their wins were within 3 seconds of the track mark, most were 4-7 seconds slower. I would think that the average time is around 2 seconds slower than the track mark? There is one undefeated horse (only 2 starts, maiden and aoc) and one that won an aoc last out by 10 1/2, those will probably be his main competition. There were a few that had won minor stakes, but I believe they were all on turf/syn.

  87. Talk about a great weekend! Sadly, I will miss Lentenor's race Saturday as I will be at Pimlico for the Preakness, but, on my drive home Sunday, I will be there for Margano's race, zero chance I would miss being there for his return! Just looking at the fields now for both races, will have a new blog entry up tonight.

  88. Yay! New pictures of Margano! Too bad you won't be there for Lenny, but make sure to post Preakness pictures, Bode is just stunning! IHA and that grey are too! And I'm a bit biased towards Tiger Walk, because I'm an Auburn fan. Lol. Looking to be a great weekend, I hope all the Preakness horses have a safe trip (I personally hope Bode goes all the way this time, and I've heard that Doug O Niell is going to try to get IHA in front of Bode, or pushing him?!?! That's crazy!!!!). Good luck and god speed to Margano and Lentenor, and may we see them in the winner's circle.

  90. Yes, NEW photos of Margano, can't wait to see him :)

Preakness is tough, I so want a Triple Crown winner, love I'll Have Another, cannot stand his trainer at all (remember Burna Dette). Call me nuts, but, I think Bode will bounce (yes, I am nuts!), and miss the board. Right now, my top three are I'll Have Another, Went the Day Well, and Teeth of the Dog. A huge step up for Teeth of the Dog, but, I think he has a outside chance. If Bode and I'll Have Another go at it, I look for Went the Day Well and Teeth of the Dog to go past them in the stretch as they both get tired. My gut is telling me that Creative Cause will have a off race, with all the traveling catching up to him, we shall see! Also, would love for Tiger Walk to do well for Sagamore! Should be a great Preakness!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Greg, your post reflects exactly the way I think the Preakness will be played. Same three horses and the Bode Bounce. Have fun at Pimlico, I live about 20 minutes away but there is no way in hell you will get me near that zoo on Preakness day. If I bet, I go to Laurel, no crowd, no drunken fools and no traffic. I think Went the Day Well gets the win.

  97. Margano looks stunning. I am very excited to see him and Lentenor race this weekend. But as for the Preakness, though I would love to have a Triple Crown winner, I still find myself rooting for Bodemeister. There is something about him that I truly like, like this feeling that I have no way to explain. But as long as every horse comes home safely, I will be content.

  98. The race Margano is entered in, the Tiller Stakes, is seven furlongs on turf....I was hoping that he would run on dirt, considering his workouts....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's "harder" for a horse to work on dirt that on turf, so it's probably better to work a horse. Where I live the horses are mostly trained on dirt and then run on turf.
(Well, it's also to protect the turf courses of wearing out too much, I think.)

  99. AQL, I'm the same way. Bob baffert said bode is doing better than before the Derby. And we all know that Mr. Baffert knows how to bring a horse put of a hard Derby, and win the preakness. And bode breaks from the same spot as lucky. I love bob baffert as a trainerhe knows what he's doing, and he said if bode were to bounce, it probably would've been in the Derby. I have a feeling bode is going to turn himself into one of the greatest horses in recent years, and Mr baffert deserves it.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Jiminy Cricket, I agree with you in every aspect mentioned! I'll Have Another is a good horse, yes, but Bodemeister is defiantly better. I hope that Bodemeister sets slower fractions in the Preakness, so he will still have something left for the stretch an final dash to the wire.

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We also have to remember that the preakness is 1/16 shorter than the Derby, and he was in the lead at that point. There is also no Triniberg, and unless iha is dumb enough to go with him, it will probably be him fading, not bode.

  105. I am in love!!! Lol in his conformation picture, he looks a LOT like La Ville.
You know the freaky thing about Bode is, he looks like he's making nice, calm, sensible fractions, and then you like down, and it says 36 mph, and the fractions are crazy! and as if that ain't enough, he goes and either blows them completely by (Ark.) or hangs in and shows he's a superstar in defeat. I think after the Preakness, BB gives him a break (like Lucky) and he's going to come back in the summer classics and show the world. As far as I am concerned, only a freak can set the 5th fastest quarter, 5th fastest half, 4th fastest 3/4, and 5th fastest mile (all faster than Secretariat) and still hold in for a game 2nd. And we must remember, in 2010, Lucky ran a tough race in the Rebel (checking, bucking, got up by a head), in the SA Derby (checking hard coming into the homestretch, and coming in 3rd), in the Derby, he was devoured (lost the race before the first turn, slammed into the rail at start, 1-2 more times before 1st turn), and came back to run a monster effort in the Preakness. He came back to win the Haskell, but sadly developed a fever the next day, and only ran 2x more. Baffert doesn't race a horse if he thinks it's going to hurt it, or is definitely too tired, or going to perform poorly. I'm getting more and more excited to see Margano and Lenny this weekend, and I hope we see them both in the winner's circle!!

  106. The 2011 foal is beautiful. Bodemeister is defiantly a superb horse, but personally, I think he needs to be rated more if that can done. And Bob Baffert is a great trainer.

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
  107. The thing is, when he's been rated behind horse, he's finished 2nd, when he's been able to set his own pace, he's won. When he was hard pressed, he finished 2nd. He needs to have his own way, and even if he just slows things down a few seconds, he can probably get it done.

  110. Tell your TB happy birthday!!!! You just made me realize we missed my Arabian/Saddlebred's 25th birthday! There is now an OTTB at our farm. He injured a tendon and was retired, and of course, his attitude is almost EXACTLY like Jimmy's, and he looks a lot like him to... So guess what??? I'm now in love with him. Sigh....too bad he can't jump, and I can't have another horse....
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  111. I shall, Jiminy. If this helps. I know horses who have recovered from tendon injuries. My mother's second horse bowed his tendon when he was in his late twenties. He recovered and was taught me how to ride afterwards. He did not jump much after that, but he still could do flat work. OTTB are wonderful horses. My TB is one. Well, give you Arabian/Saddlebred a belated birthday wish from me and Elliot, my OTTB. He raced under the name American Quail, hence my name.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I'm not sure what type of tendon injury it was, but it's pretty much a moot point, because I doubt I could talk my parents (dad) into a new horse. My mom actually asked the lady we board with if they would sell him. But now she doesn't want him, either, because he can't jump, although I am making progress on my Quarab. But, oh well, at least I can love on him while he's there. I'm kind of scared that if we actually did get him, he'd end up racking up vet bills, like Jimmy did. Because this horse isn't completely healed. Waiting on Lenny's race, uploading A day pictures to FB. -.- All I've gotta say is hurry up and get to Lenny's race!!! ;)

  113. Jiminy...LOL, I looked at the confirmation photo and said DAMN, he looks just like Dynaformer. Oh well, we can't all agree on everything. The white star looks more like Barbaros then any of the other brothers. He is a nice looking colt. I heard the Jacksons will name him in July. LVR is getting up there and probably wont have more then 3 or 4 more foals before they retire her, so they better make them count. If her breeding to Bernardini took, she will be 17 when she foals this one. The whole Bernardini thing still irritates me, but then I was never a fan of AP Indy either. One things for sure, Bernardini is getting more then his fair share of stakes winning mares in his book. He not only bred LVR this season but 2010 Breeders Cup F&M Turf winner Shared Account and Rachel Alexandra also.

For the record, I really like her with Lemon Drop Kid, but Ive always loved Kingmambo. I also like her with Medaglia D'Oro or Paddy O'Prado(about as close as your going to get to Sadlers Wells blood in the states) There are TEN graded stakes winners bred on this cross including Rachel Alexandra and Warriors Reward.

Am watching HRTV now waiting for Lentenor(GO..LENNY !) and the Preakness to run. (GO..WENT THE DAY WELL !) The track at Pimlico is favoring closers today for those who are betting. Safe racing to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Actually, I've been watching, and it's the turf track favoring closers. The 2 dirt races I really payed attention to, Paynter won (1st almost the whole way, 2nd by a head around the turn, and then bounded away, exact connections of Bode, so Mike got a winning test ride), and then there was a stakes race where the horse was 2nd most of the time, but 1st at several points, and also just bounced away. I am the same with the whole Bernardini thing, although I do like AP Indy. I would like to see her crossed with Medaglia D' Oro, that should be a pretty good foal. I absolutely HATE that they sent Rachel the Bernardini, I doubt Jess wouldv'e done it, and I think Barbara did it because of Zenyatta, in fact, I think that's why he's gotten more than his fair share of stakes winners this year.

  120. He ran a rather game 2nd, getting in a stretch duel with Yankee fortune, but they were both blown by by the favorite, Mr. Taggs sky blazer. 123. I dont really trust sources like that, he's staying the heavyish favorite, and it could just be his thing to be worked up, if hw is actually worked up. 126. I think its the music bothering Bode, a lot of the horses in the barn area are excited because of the noise. It's extremely loud at the northern end of the track. Arron V of HRTV mentioned how loud it was. They have not mentioned anything about the horses being upset by it on HRTV or TVG so obviously it must not be worth mentioning.

AQL, I honestly never thought Bodemeister had a chance in this race. I could be wrong and I hope I am for Bode Bafforts sake, and you saw how upset Bob was for little Bode when Bodemeister didn't win the Derby, but I, like Greg, think Bodemeister will bounce big today.

    Criminal Type

    ReplyDelete
  127. They just showed bode, and he was calm and relaxed, with not a drop of sweat on him. He was so bored he yawned! Also, because of bode baffert, bob baffert would never enter bode if he wast primed for a great effort. Bob doesn't want to upset bode baffert. Or bode the horse for that matter.
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  128. Which horse is it exactly that Bob Baffert is taking Bode back off of ? His best bet to win is to run flat out for the wire and hope they don't catch him. There is no speed in the race except Bodemeister. Just because Bodemeister was in the lead at the 16th pole at Churchill doesn't mean he will be at Pimlico, it's very different and deeper surface with much tighter turns. He is used to the relative shallowness of the surface at Santa Anita and Churchill. The composition of the three racing surfaces are very different. You can look at them and see the difference in the color of the dirt/clay/sand. Both of those tracks have much wider tracks and the turns are not nearly as tight. The front stretch at Churchill is 120 feet wide, at Pimlico its 70 feet wide.

Baffert doesn't own the horse, he is owned in a partnership. If the horse is sound and the owners say run him, what does Baffert do ? He runs the horse or loses all the Zayat horses. Your dreaming if you think those partner's care more about little Bode's feelings then they do about winning a classic race. However, I know Bob does and will do his best to cheer Bode up, just as he did after the Derby should he not win again today.

Bob is double speaking, he's not going to change the horses style, but to win he has to come from off the pace because the track slower then Louisville is setting up that way.

I'll have another looks FANTASTIC and so does Went the Day Well. I like the other Gray, Cozetti too.

    Criminal Type

    ReplyDelete
  129. The owners listen to their trainers. The owners do not want to run the horse if it is a sure bet that the horse will lose. If Bob tells them that the horse shouldn't be run, they don't run it. It was Bob's decision, the trainers have the final decision to enter the horse. I do believe the trainers fill out the entry. Bob Baffert said HE didn't decide whether to run the horse until HE saw him. And if the owner didn't care about Bode, why in the world would they name a horse after him? It is ultimately the trainer's job to decide whether or not to run. Gary Stevens just said: "Believe me, BOB wouldn't run Bode if he didn't think he was doing as good or better as he was before the Derby". If the owner said go, and he didn't think the horse should, but he didn't argue, and the horse runs well below par, or is injured due to fatigue, then that's when Zayat would pull their horses out. If Zayat had said yes, and Bob thought no, he would've told them, and they would've/should've listened, because it is ultimately the trainer that knows when the horse should run. I have heard all week that Mr. Baffert made the decision that the horse was fit enough to run. Also, Bode rates, he loses, and you are forgetting Arkansas, what do you think of that track? He's raced on 3 COMPLETELY different tracks. There is no pace, and IHA is planning to go with him-which would be suicide.

  130. Ignore my upper comment ^^. I've been in a bad mood for some reason this week. I've decided to tone it down and simplify, and I can't delete the comment.
Trainers job-Trains the horse, finds races to enter, and ok's the race with the owner
The owner then ok's the race, or says no, they don't want to run there for whatever reasons.
The trainer ultimately decides where to run.
    Jiminy Cricket

  131. Sometimes, the owner tells the trainer they want to run somewhere, and ask if the horse is ready.

Bobe does have less experience then the rest of the horses, so I wonder if that affects how he runs. I heard somewhere that he knows how to run, bu not how to race.

  143. Yes, it seems he needs to learn how to fight back when he's looked in the eye, because so far, he hasn't done that. He was critter today, than in the Derby, but still not gritty enough. If he knew how to fight for the win (as Lenny did for 2nd earlier!) I think there's a chance he would be undefeated right now, but ya know, that's just my thoughts. Any for on nick? 144. Considering Bodemeister set such wicked fractions in the Derby, I Was rather shocked when I saw the final Preakness time. 1.55.94..Thats very slow considering the track record is nearly 3.5 seconds faster and the stakes record nearly 3 seconds faster. While my opinion of the horse has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 2 weeks, I don't think he will be allowed to run so slowly in New York. I expect someone, Zito maybe (he has a record for destroying TC hopes in that race) to throw a horse ala Birdstone, in the race and spoil it for the fans, owners, trainer and jockey. I also feel he will have to run pretty fast the last half mile with Dullahan and Union Rag's nipping at his heels. Gary Stevens is CRAZY if he thinks those two can't run fast enough to catch I'll Have Another. Is Trinniburg going to New York? Anyone know?

  145. I hope bode gets a rest, and doesn't go to belmont, he deserves a break. I think trinnibergs owners would be INSANE to send him to belmont, especially after how he went in the derby. Now time to play the wait game for Marganos race.

  146. And also, they said the time was good, considering how slow the track had been playing.

  148. To fight back.....I think that is a good way to put it. Bodemeister is fast, but he does not seem that he truly fights when a horse, in this case, I'll Have Another, comes up to pass him. Personally, if I could train him, I would use a training method where Bodemeister would be running on the track and then another horse comes up and tries to pass him. Hopefully, he would learn to dig in and really fight. But second is still great, so I guess we cannot complain too much.

  150. Not too much longer, now. Sigh, playing the wait game. Then I get to now the lawn, yay!!

  151. 2nd!! He needs a bit more distance. Did you see him lengthen his stride???? Wow! I think he lengthens out and is going to be a major stakes player. He almost caught the 1-2 favorite, just 10 more feet and he would've!
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  152. I am so proud of Margano! He looked just like Barbaro, just cruising along! If only we had 10 more feet left, he would've caught the favorite! Noone can deny that Margano is a champion in the making!

  153. He's just magnificent. As usual, calm, poised and confident. The way he lengthened his stride was goose bumps making -- and he was only half a length off the winner. This boy is going to thrill us all! (he did today, even though he didn't win.) Cannot wait to hear Greg's take... we saw him in the paddock on TVG! There was a little girl with a Margano sign and he was talking to her and then turned to take a photo.

    2. Hi, Cam! You are welcome to the FOBs (FON'FOL'FOM) world where we, too, love Margano. Have you been a fan for a while? Tell us about yourself! Didi you know that the announcers on HRTV noticed you and your sign, too? They commented on it after the race.

  154. This race was a little too short for Margano, I would have loved to see more of that stride of his... He's bigger and more beautiful and stronger than ever. Watch out world!

  155. I had not seen the little girl with a Margano sign, but it sounds adorable. I agree, Daff, that he needs a longer race. He is going to be a distance horse just like Barbaro.

  157. He still showed he was a tad bit green, he changed back to his left lead when he was hit right handed, but that was also when he took off. The winner also switched leads when hit right handed. What I noticed, was when he hit Margano, Margano took off, and then started slowing down again, and the jockey hit him again, and he took off again, but just didn't quite get there. He's still a bit green, but obviously knows what racing is about, unlike Bode (sadly). Maybe Bode should take lessons from him? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  158. I agree, Jiminy Cricket. Margano is still green, but I had not noticed the lead changes. He does know how to race, but I think he needs some practice with leads.

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
  159. Yes, I think he does. I actually noticed something DURING the race, not seeing someone else montion it and going back and looking lol. But, he changed it rather roughly, and went into blast off mode at the same time, so that's why I noticed.

  160. Interesting. Watching it again, I think I see the lead change.
Well, Bode will not be running in the Belmont. Bob Baffert said "I've had enough."

  167. I contacted Mr. Tagg and Robin. They said that Margano came out of the race in good condition as did Sky Blazer. From what I can understand, the Tiller Stakes did not take much out of Margano.

  171. Sadly, no. A girl who was in my high school passed away over the weekend. She was a senior and has less then a week before she would have graduated. The entire school is in a state of shock. On a happier note, I'll Have Another has a chance to be the 12th Triple Crown winner.

  172. Fantastic news on Margano! Wow! Sorry about the girl. Last year, a kid in my grade committed suicide, and on the same day, a boy from the other middle school that feeds into the high school (he was also same grade) died in the hospital from playing the choking game. It was pretty bad for several days, kids breaking down, and everything. And this year, on the anniversary, the school was so quite.

  174. Sadly, this girl did end her own life. There are so many rumors spreading around regarding how and why she did what she did. Many of us just want to know why, because we just....want to know if we could have done something. I did not know her, but I find myself unable to stop thinking of her. The girl's mother works in the middle school, therefore the word has spread down there as well. My mother, who is a teacher, taught the girl in the 8th grade, so she is just devastated. Apparently, the girl passed on during Prom....On a better note, I am truly proud of Margano.

  176. As a parent who has lost a child, my heart goes out to the parents of both of these children. My son died of natural causes, an asthma attack in his sleep at age 23, on Thanksgiving no less. Burying a child is the most unatural thing I can think of. I cannot even fathom how much worse it must be to lose a child by their own hand. Suicide is a permenant solution to a temporary problem. So sad these kids did not get the help they obviously needed.

Jiminy and AQL, you two are so young (i am 51) to be learning these hard lessons of life and I sympathise with your anger, confussion and heartache. It's a hard thing to deal with.

On a lighter note, I was very impressed with Margano's performance on Sunday and he looks terrific although maybe a tad lazy. I say maybe because it is his first race back from a layoff and should improve off of this race. I also think he needs more distance, another furlong and he would have won, no question.

Jiminy I would love to see a photo of your arab saddlebred cross. I have an 3/4 Arab and 1/4 Morgan who just turned 4 on 5/15. He is in training now for endurance. He is all black except the inside quarter of his off hind heel. I tell people this is where god held him when he dipped Warrior in the black...haha. If you do a F/B search for my name (Kimberly Shugars) send me a friend request and his pictures are there.

  177. Thank you for you sympathy, Criminal Type, and I am sorry, too, for your own loss. We lost our beloved senior horse, Nugget, on Thanksgiving, too.....I agree that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but we have little idea was to what caused this girl to do this. Sadly, this is not the first suicide that I have endured. My own uncle, the only uncle that is trustworthy is my family, took his own life last August due to a divorce with my aunt. On a better note, your horse sounds beautiful, and I agree that Margano was impressive.

  178. Thankfully, I didnt know either person myself, but I had friends who did. My moms brother died at 17 I think from hodgkins disease, and like 1-2 years later they found a cure. My grandparents never really recovered from that. I will look you up on facebook, ive got TONS of pictures on there of the horse. We also have a Quarab and take care of a 3/4 Arab.

  183. good job Lentenor and Margano... is it possible to see Margano race I'll Have Another in Belmont? the way he ran last weekend i think he's ready for a BIG Belmont Stakes... :)

    ReplyDelete
  184. I think it may be too close together for that. He's still rather green, and has never raced on dirt.

And yes daffy, it was like 25 years before I was born, but thanks.
    Jiminy Cricket

    ReplyDelete
  185. For loading troublesome horses, the best thing to do is try and practice having them put a foot in at first and then two feet, and then all four. Then have them walk in and then back off a few times once they feel comfortable with being in the trailer. Some horses do not like the light changes when they are put into a trailer and some do not like the "claustrophobic" aspect of them. I will see what I can find to also help. Good luck. And as for Margano racing in the Belmont, it is possible, but it would be unwise because he has never raced on dirt before, though his workouts show that he would be outstanding. Secondly, I do not think he has the earnings to qualify, but well, we'll see.

    ~AQL

    ReplyDelete
  186. He will get his front feet up, but he backs out when we try to get him further. Yesterday, i sat up in the front of the trailer, and pulled him while holding out a treat, ii got him halfway in. His problem is he reared up and hit his head several years ago.
