I jumped 3'8 on a 3 year old in catch me charlie(just for the record i didnt get along with him that great, I could barely get him over 1' that January, this was last year). My friend has sent all her horses to a trainer right after their 2nd birthday. They are usually harder to train the longer they sit in pastures. I think it might be better to wait and start heavy training at 3,but still start them at 2. You have to think though, some horses back in the old days raced 20x at 2. True, my personal horse wasn't started til he was 4, but he want in a good situation before my friends trainer bought him, and he was only started then, because me and my friend decided we needed a new horse. So, I think it's ok to start them at 2, but maybe they should wait til their 3 for breezing, etc.
Jiminy CricketAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456060196590291996.post-76122740875341303742011-08-07T06:59:14.515-04:002011-08-07T06:59:14.515-04:00I too think they start these horses too early, the...I too think they start these horses too early, they are being ridden as young two yr olds which is ridiculous. Ive heard the argument that stressing the bones makes them stronger but Im not buying it. The problem with that theory is that research has shown that a horses knees are not fully developed until they are 3. I own a young horse, an Arabian colt, He turned 3 in May and we are just now saddling him. I know I'm a little behind, but he has been a project and he likes to be difficult. (im facing the fact that he should be gelded but I hate it because he is so beautiful) My point is, I would never have dreamed of getting on his back until he was 3. I was raised around horses and this was always the case. Don't ride them till they are 3. A horse is not fully mature until age 7. My horse has had hours and hours of ground work and is pretty fit and the vet says he has great bone and very hard feet. I want to make an endurance horse out of him so this is a good thing. I guess going slowly with a horse is easy when there is no money at stake, but i think it's better for the horse.Dearnhardtrlz3https://www.blogger.com/profile/17411430803809494963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456060196590291996.post-29678419470115713332011-08-06T19:37:05.085-04:002011-08-06T19:37:05.085-04:00Boltzapper finished 4th as the odds on favorite in...Boltzapper finished 4th as the odds on favorite in his stakes race at Calder today. Boltzapper appeared to be in good position, but faded near the end. The track was sloppy and maybe Boltzapper didn't like the slop. A little disappointing, but there should be other stakes races. Just stay healthy.

Jiminy Cricket: I think that you are right as far as Holy Ground not getting great mares or not even very good ones. The dam of Boltzapper has produced a stakes winner, but Holy Ground had already sired Boltzapper before anyone knew that the mare had produced anything good. So, Holy Ground being booked to a good broodmare was probably an accident.

As far as Nicanor is concerned, I think that if he wins a stakes race, it may make a little difference as far as his stallion service is concerned, but not that big a difference unless it is a graded stakes, and I am not sure that Nicanor can win a graded stakes at this point.

Nicky might get a good book of mares anyway. I think that a lot of people on these threads would breed their mares to Nicanor if they had mares to breed. They love him.

Anyway, I just hope that everything works out for the best for Nicanor.

Take care.

Fan of Holy Ground.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456060196590291996.post-80976225364097696972011-08-06T16:35:19.854-04:002011-08-06T16:35:19.854-04:00Spelled dam the wrong way, didn't I? Tagg almost had a triple crown with Funny Cide, I think he knows what he's doing. I personally can't wait until margano starts.
Fan of Holy Ground

I think Nicanor will retire at the end of the year or early next year before breeding season. He may finish out next year, he won't be that valuable of a stud until he gets a stakes win. Dunkirk was a 3.1 million dollar yearling, stakes placed behind quality road in the Florida Derby, and ran 2nd behind Summer Bird in the Belmont after a stretch duel with MTB, and he was possibly running on an injured leg(came out with a condylar fracture) and he started at 10k. Nick will probably start at 5k with not the greatest book, he will have to work his way up. I have heard several people say Holy Ground doesn't get great mares, and you have to remembr he is by the same damn as Nick(if I have read yal right lol).

Anyways I can't wait til all their next races, maybe Len will be a force to reckon with in the 2nd half.:)
Jiminy CricketAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456060196590291996.post-84311151307346289952011-08-06T11:52:31.963-04:002011-08-06T11:52:31.963-04:00Im not sure if any of you were watching the racing...Im not sure if any of you were watching the racing at Saratoga yesterday, But another Dynaformer son, Bearpath stumbled at the top of the stretch first time round in the John's Call stakes unseating Freddie Lenclud. He continued to run, obviously favoring his right foreleg for another 6 furlongs before the Emergency crew caught up with him. He was vanned off the track and I've heard nothing else since then. I hope his injuries are not life threatening. It just breaks my heart and makes me think of all the great ones we have lost in the past few years to injury or the dreaded laminitis. God bless them all.

Penny, Im so sorry about the lose of your brother. I know from experience there is nothing that can really be said to make you feel better. Nicanor has done as good a job as anyone could reasonably expect, and is 5 years old, so maybe now is a good time. I know that most of the people here are anxious to see Nicanor race again, but he would certainly be safer on a stud farm rather than racing some more.

Nicanor has won some races and is stakes placed, so I think that he qualifies as a stallion. Also, he is a full brother to Barbaro and a son of Dynaformer, so he should be able to get booked to some mares.
